YABT - Need some tips on a new beer

Hey all I'm headed down to the Party Source which is a pretty huge liquor establishment right on the river in downtown Cincinnati. Been there a few times but usually just buy the same stuff I could buy at a grocery store. Here's the link

Pretty cool place really.

Anyway, looking to try some new beers. I used to drink nothing but cheap domestics when I was younger (28 now). I've moved on to regularly drinking a bit more expensive beers I guess, but nothing crazy. Here's what I really like.

Sam Adams - regular boston lager, most delicious beer I've ever had.
Newcastle - 2nd most delicious beer I've ever had.
Leinenkugel's - pretty good
Yuengling - had it a couple times visiting gf's family in PA, not sure it's sold down here
Corona - I'll drink this every now and then with a lime
Warsteiner - Very good
Stella Artois - very good too

Don't like -
-Guiness - at all, don't like the bitterness..goes good in some food recipes I have though.
-Sam's Winter Lager
-most any domestic - no flavor...I can drink Coors Lite if there's nothing else available
-can't think of any heavy heavy beers that I like

I drink the first two it seems almost regularly. I'd like to find some new beers that are suited to my tastes. This place I'm going to has quite a large selection of beer. Based on the website and what you think may be there, what would ATOT recommend for me?

edit - I usually drink for flavor..never drinking more than 4-5 a session. When I drink more than that I choose a light beer which is usually difficult as the only ones I can stomach are Corona...Coors Light (I guess)...

If Sam Adams Lager is the most delicious beer you've ever had and you hate the bitterness of Guinness then I'm not even going to try suggesting anything. I don't like lagers and love the dark beers.

Maybe give an abby ale a try? Ommegang is a reasonably priced entry into the Belgian abby ale style.

I can always give Guiness another shot.
 
Sounds like you like lagers (pilsners, mex, and domestic micro)
So,
Try Paulaner Pils or even their Hefeweizen, or Bitburger. Both German pils.
Try Pacifico next time for your mex with lime.
Kona Brewing Island Lager is very good, for a Sam Adams style. Not sure if you can get it back east. I love their Pale Ale.
And step up to Ales. A great Pale Ale that isn't too bitter is Stone (Kona isn't too bitter either). Stone Levitation Ale isn't bad. IPA would be too harsh and bitter for you.

So ales are more bitter than lager's? I'd like to try some. Yeah it seems like lagers are generally my thing. I always like to try and find new beers, so I'm going to see what I can find.
 
Wexford's Irish Cream Ale. It's a reasonable facsimile to Caffrey's Irish Ale which is no longer imported to the US.

Wexford is a good substitution for Caffrey's. If I can't find Wexford I just pick up some Boddington's. I miss Caffrey's. 🙁

You're right lol. I guess I use the team domestic to generalize beers from Anheuser Busch and Miller, etc.

Anyone try the new Sam Adams Noble Pils? Getting great reviews on beeradvocate, I'll have to give it a try.

Yeah, ales tend to be more bitter, but it's not necessarily bad. Try Sierra Nevada pale ale too, it seems to be just about everywhere. It's bitter, but not overly so IMO, and the bitterness come through in very tasty citrus flavors. Sierra Nevada's pale ale is pretty much the classic American pale ale.

Another vote for Stone too, it's one of my favorite breweries. It's from CA though and it might not be that far east.
 
You're in Cincinnati, so I would imagine that you can get Great Lakes. If Sam Adam's Boston Lager is your favorite beer, you'll probably LOVE Dortmunder Gold. Elliott Ness is also great.

It kind of sounds like Guinness might be the only Stout/Porter he has ever tried. Which is an issue. Considering Guinness is like the Bud Light of Stouts.

Every Sam Adam Stout is so damn smooth, and the exact opposite of bitter. Some even come across as sweet. The difference being the Boston Beer Company goes out of their way to find malts that roast beautifully, and they don't char them. I'm fairly certain Guinness comes damn close to making their malt just pure ash. 😛 It's bitter because it's fairly burnt for the color, but Guinness has like no character. It's all lies that beer.
But I will drink it at an Irish pub where it is served properly, it gets more character than nothing, and typically the only stout or porter they even have if it's an Irish pub, and I crave a heavy beer when at such an establishment.

But basically, Guinness is bitter because it's Guinness, not because of the type of beer.

Ooo, and want a sipping experience? Try anything Sam Adams Imperial Series - the Doublebock is almost intensely sweet and very rich, the Imperial Stout... I actually was not fond of one bit.

But the Cream Stout is delicious. Holiday Porter is pretty tasty too.

For lighter beers, Shiner Bock is awesome. One thing I miss about my last visit to Texas - I had to leave behind the domestic sale prices for Shiner at bars. And hell, even HAVING it at bars in general. I can only find it at Kroger (our grocery store 'round these parts for you western folk).

Does Extra Stout taste like burning, or is that limited to the readily available Guinness in the US? I don't see Extra Stout all the time, and have not felt like gambling with my money on it, as I don't like paying a premium for beer that I will not enjoy drinking, and Guinness often feels like a waste of money. I can enjoy it to a degree, I easily prefer just about any other stout, hell, even might gamble on other stouts before willingly purchasing an untasted Guinness product.
