Well, $305.00 is too much already, there is no way I will be able to spend $700.00 for a single bike..
I will have to buy 2 bikes, second one for my fiance, helmets, bike rack, etc,etc...

What would you recommend for a used bike in the 100$ price range? 😀

Rather.. what brands should I be looking for?

Is Specialized good?

yes specialized is good, but even used one is gonna be hard to get for 100$, my first FSR was a specialzed, i got used for 600$ off of ebay, it was in great condition and held great, except for that 15 foot stair gap i did when i was drunk, but that another story

Could get an HR non comp (no disks) for $600 or so. Also I have a Giant Boulder SE that is a great ride for casual riding, I mean its not a downhill bike or anything like that, but its a good ride, nice shimano paddle shifters, decent front shocks (fine for light jumping) and great tires for the price range (2.2's iirc) not disc capable though. You could find a good deal on one of these.

Yeah specialized makes nice bikes, my friend has an HR comp, hes gotten really good with it, can get up on picnic tables by j-hopping, he bent the front fork on his last bike jumping some stairs so he upgraded to this and now wants to jump off of this 15 foot wall on campus...I don't have cojones like that lol

I've never spent more then $150 + $30 (new seat) for a bike in my life - let alone $600+ I see being thrown around in this forum. What do you get for all that extra mulah?

the frame of my current bike cost 1300$ by itself

anyway more money gets you better components, that are lighter, stronger, and they last longer, better quality all around, better frame, usiall lighter and stronger, better shocks as well

just like a car more you spend more extas you get

600-1000 is typical range for a good all around bike thats a HT

a good FS bike is gonna cost at least 1500, because the rear shocks are like 400+ themselfs

theres about 2500 into my bike right now i think

Thanks for your tips Anubis...
Anyway, does anyone know something about this company?
Motobecane?
Make sure to check their selection...
These bikes really do look nice!

Motobecane used to be a French company that made excellent quality road bikes during the 70s. I had a Motobecane LeChampion I bought used in the mid 80s and I owned and road that bike for 10+ years until I moved to California in the early 90s. It was stolen from my garage though a couple years after I moved here. I was heart broken. The bike was all Reynolds 531 double butted steel tubing with Campagnolo components. It was a really really nice bike.

I seem to remember hearing that their bikes are mass produced now though and have dropped in quality. This was a few years ago though so maybe quality has improved. That one you linked to would be a good deal at $300.

Edit-Have you ridden the Motobecane? How did you like it?

Well, you might find a decent used bike for around that price but you won't find a decent new bike for that price. Cheap bikes are just that, cheap. They use stamped steel components that are of relatively poor quality and are usually assembled poorly by department store employees. These bikes are often much heavier than a good quality bike store bike also.

A cheap department store bike will not last if you plan to ride it regularly.

Thanks for the info,
I have never ridden Motobecane before, actually this is one of the first times I hear the name...😀
The building quality would be a huge unknown though 🙁

Weird, what to do you mean by last? My Huffy has lasted through 4 years of college so far, just needed to tighten the breaks and pump air for the tires every once in a while.

EDIT : I do admit it is pretty damn heavy compared to a friend's $500 bike though -- but I'm a strong one and that aspect doesn't bother me too much. Part of it might be I really don't ride for pleasure -- a bike is just the best way to get around campus/town here.

Looks to be about the same amount of bike I bought for my gf except hers doesn't have disc brakes. Everything else is nearly identical component wise. I got her a Haro V2. I don't really know if mechanical disc brakes are a heck of a lot better then v-brakes tho.......

And Chu, that Huffy is about the only bike I'd feel comfortable locking up somewhere (other then in my garage) and walking away from. From that aspect, its about as good as you can do. Tho, the last Huffy we had was stolen from the storage shed😛

On a completly different note about Huffy -- wtf is up with this kid on the intro page of huffy's site? It looks like a chrismas gnome trying to be street - and failing miserably.

Seriously, if all youre doing is biking to school then get yourself a cheap bike from Walmart and when it breaks, buy a new one. That wat if someone steals it you're only out like $60 or something. Now if you want to be a cool badass and ride trails and jumps and stuff, get yourself a Trek or Specialized (heck, you can get a Trek 4100 for less than $300 new) and start kicking ass.
