YAAXP OC thread

While not completing all stability tests (still working on it), I built a Barton XP 2500+ system. Upon first firing it up and going into the BIOS, I immediately OC'ed it. 12.5*200 (2.5GHz) on retail cooling, just removing that weird stuff on there and replacing it with AS3. The voltage is set @ 1.8V on a A7N8X-D motherboard. So far, after nearly 3 hours. Prime 95 has not yet failed. Being how most bad OC's give a failure on the first 10 tests, I expect this to be stable for the 24 hour test.

But getting back to the main question, how is this OC? Typical, excellent (compared with retail cooling), or poor? This is one of my few AMD builds for someone. Of those few, none wanted me to OC. This I just did outta the 'box'. I forgot to write down the stepping though :|, being in a hurry on this one I slapped it together to make sure I get my tests done before I hand it over.

2.5 is very respectable, I am running that with m after market heatsink since I got the mobile chip... what temps are you seeing on those settings?

2.5 is not bad...

push 2.6... don't be afraid to give it juice...

the max voltage for these chips are 2.15 volts so staying under 2 should be okay... the only issue you'll have is with heat....

Did even better. I dropped the voltage to 1.75, upped the FSB to 210, so now it is @ 2625 priming away stable so far. Asus probe reports the temp as 42C.

I seem to have hit a rock wall @ 220 FSB and beyond... no matter what I set the multiplier at it will not boot into windows. So now I have it @ 12.5*218 (2725), from what I gather... high FSB has always been a drawback for the A7N8X series.
I just started priming it, I am going to run it for about 4 hours. If it pases 4 hours (a time restraint from the purchaser) I will consider it stable. (it already passed my other tests)

What would the effective PR rating be for 2725MHz?

For 2725 it required me to bring the voltage back upto 1.8V. I was hoping to do it with 1.75V. And yes, the retail cooler the CPU came with.

HOLY SH!T you are lucky.
for my 2500+M to hit 2.7, i need to bump the vcore to 2.15! even 2.6 requires 2.0v!
how old is it, and are you sure you are not really running an 11x multi?

Yup, I unlocked the CPU from that nifty web site everyone here links to upon opening the box. The CPU was fresh in from ZipZoomFly.com, the retail 2500+ Barton. Unfortunately it does not boot on any multiplier higher than 12.5 (not even to BIOS )

I thought that the max was 1.85v according to AMD?

hmm... from what i gather, i thought it was 2.15

i ran my mobile bartons at 2.00-2.05 under my prommy and had no problems whatsoever... and it's still alive and kickin'

Well, it's gone. The proud owner picked it up before I could test it with apps and see how well it performs short of lame benchies. Is it worth it to build another XP system, or just go with A64?

that is an excellent overclock esp if its a non-mobile barton. And especially because of only stock cooling. For your own box, build an A64 - performance increase in games is worth the $ (assuming you game )

as much as 2.7 is sweet on air....

the A64 still performs better at gaming at clockspeeds lower than that...

it's mighty tempting but just go A64
