YA"is there a Doctor here?"T

Yes, it's probably just muscle pain, and yes I will go see a real doctor if it doesn't go away by friday, but you guys are here, so what the hey 😀

I have annoying (not debilitating. It feels like sore muscle pain from lactose build up, but has been present for 4 days)pain in the joints of my middle three fingers of both hands in the outermost joint (between the distal and middle phalanges). It does not affect my thumb or "baby" finger. My toes/feet/ankles all feel fine.

The pain is not present in a relaxed state, but can be felt as soon as the fingers are bent, or when external pressure is applied to the sides of the joints. The joints do not give any visible indication of swelling or inflammation. Repeatedly flexing the joints, applying hot or cold, "loosens it up", but the pain returns after some time of inactivity.

"things I've done different recently" include exposing my unprotected hands to asphaltic material and hexane. I've read the MSDS on both materials and if they are to be believed, the duration and acute nature of the exposure would not present a problem, and I did not experience any other symptoms of poisoning. (Though I expect most of those symptoms are systemic resulting from inhalation rather than skin absorption).

The only other thing I did differently is I steam cleaned my bathroom. This would have provided a chance to inhale old urine (can urea cause gout from inhalation? there's an odd thought) and any pesticides that were applied to the floor by the pest control guy. I would assume that any pesticide would have degraded in the month since last spraying, and fingertip pain does not sound systemic, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Here's why it's not Gout and quote from my medical surgical nursing book

Gout is a systemic disease (i.e., condition that occurs throughout the body) caused by the buildup of uric acid in the joints. An elevated blood level of uric acid (called hyperuricemia) occurs when the liver produces more uric acid than the body can excrete in the urine, or when a diet high in rich foods (e.g., red meat, cream sauces, red wine) produces more uric acid than the kidneys can filter from the blood.

Over time, uric acid in the blood crystallizes and settles in the joint spaces, causing swelling, inflammation, stiffness, and pain. Gout usually affects the first metatarsal phalangeal joint of the big toe (hallux) or the ankle joints.

Honestly it's probably some arthritis, how old are you anyways? And do you work with your hands often?

29, and I don't do a lot of strenuous work with my hands, but I do use a mouse - basically while I am awake. If it wasn't equally affecting both hands, I would have blamed it on my mouse. I *did* use my hands saturday on a project, but not to a degree that I would think would cause pain, just more than I normally use them ... Can arthritis be "brought on" like that? (or am I overreacting about muscle pain and being a sissy?)

And you say this doesnt affect your thumb at all and it's on both hands?

EDIT: YGPM

And yea probably just some minor arthritis

Nope, just the middle three, and just the outermost joint, and on both hands.
edit: oops, I'll check the PM and stop bumping. Thanks for the help 😀

You've got milk build up in your fingers??? Lactose is a milk product. ;>

I think you really meant lactic acid buildup, but I've never heard of that being in your fingers. Your fingers are controlled by ligaments and tendons, not muscles. The muscles that pull on the tendons are in your wrists. If you truly have joint pain, it could be arthritis, or just tendonitis.
