I think, once the situation is escalated, gender is thrown out the issue. Women for too long have tried to take advantage of that, I've seen it personally on numerous occasions. Women think they can just badger and hit a man and they are in no threat of retaliation because it's "wrong".
I'll NEVER hit a woman... first.
If a woman pushes me, I won't hit her, I'll just push her or attempt to pin her if violence escalates.
I really hope I never am in a situation where a woman is actually trying or successfully punching me. That'll really mess me up in my mind. I don't want to strike a woman, but dammit if she is punching me I'm going to feel there is no longer an option. I'll likely just try and tackle her and pin her to cut off the violence, but that's ideally, and without that having happened. In the actual situation, hell who knows. I can also lose myself in anger.
