theres also western vs asian jerky. both good though. asians also have extremely shredded jerky for putting in congee(jook) or whatever.

That's not beef! ;)

BTW, I like this stuff. Me and my brother just bought 9 pounds! of this stuff with an average price of $17.22 a pound. It's the best stuff.

And, it ain't chicken either.

Make your own ... much cheaper & better. Get one of those dehydrators, their pretty cheap. Then get about the cheapest lean cut of beef you can find and slice it into about 1/8" to 1/4" thck strips, soak it in your marinade for about a day, then dry it.

Because good steak costs a lot. Then when they dry/smoke it, it shrinks quite a bit, since meat is mostly water. Then all those spices they smother it in aren'te cheap either.

Negative. Only the crap kinds are.

The GF and I make our own jerky for summer hiking/fishing trips from lean flank steak. So good. All you need is an inexpensive food dehydrator.

edit: can't type this AM

The best (and hottest beef jerky) comes from THE JERKY HUT.

I ordered the double habanero jerky and damn that thing was burning the taste buds off my tongue!

Find a bulk jerky store. There's one near my place that sells beef jerky for $18/lb, turkey jerky for $16/pound. There're about 10 different flavors! (Not counting the cheaper "slim jim" type reconstituted meat sticks.) Best part is: FREE SAMPLES!! No limit--but I think the store owner would get really mad if I spent my entire lunch hour in there . . .

Oh--BTW--Jerky is bad for you--all the preservatives (nitrites and sulfites).

The Chinese also has the barbecued jerky stuff. I think the name literally translates into "Dragon Meat." It's heaven . . .

Snackmaster's jerky has no preservatives. It's the only one my cat is willing to snack on too.

I think it is supply and demand. Everything is expensive at gas stations and that is where a lot of jerky is found. You gotta go to the places mentioned above like Costco! Maybe I should make some venison jerky with all the venison we have in the freezer... Hrm... We got an electric oven here in the apartment that goes pretty low but probably not low enough. I don't know if I really want to buy a dehydrator!
