XviD vs. DivX 5

If you are watching a SVCD on a TV, you probably would have trouble telling the difference between that and the DVD. Its probably difficult to tell the difference between the one disc and two disc Lord of the Rings DVDs on a TV, or a XviD movie versus a DivX movie.

On a monitor you should be able to see some differences between any of those sources, as the resolution is far greater than the source video. DivX and XviD offer greater compression, so you can fit more movie into a given filesize, and by extension, get greater quality (higher bitrate) based on filesize.

I have a bunch of svcd movies that play on my dvd player and i cant tell the difference between a dvd and svcd.

Well SVCD is 480 x 480 while DVD is 480 X 720 so I doubt you would see much difference on a standard TV. Truthfully DVD is kinda lame now that I've used High Defintion, 300,000 pixels is no match for 2 million pixels.

HDDVD would be fukkin awesome! It would give me a reason to get a new monitor, too, since my 19 incher only goes up to 1600x1200 at decent refresh rates. A 24 inch LCD would be just about right. 😛

Oh, and back on topic - I didn't even know about Xvid; DivX has been my codec of choice ever since the v3 days. I'll have to check out Xvid soon, though.
