Xvid on PS3

I bought the PS3 to be used as a Blu-Ray DVD player, but discovered the joys of streaming media shortly after first booting it up. Anyway, I am using my PC as a media server for frequently watched DVDs for my four-year old and I like the convenience of ripping the DVD and converting it to an .mp4 file for ease of organization and space. I use Handbrake to convert from DVD to h264/x264 in an mp4 container and prefer the image to FFmpeg of similar size. Unfortunately, it takes so lllllooooonnnnnggg to convert to x264......... I wanted to chek out and compare Xvid to x264, but when I converted the DVD to Xvid in an .mp4 container, the PS3 says the data is unsupported. Everything I've read on the internet says that the PS3 supports DivX and Xvid. I'm confused, what am I doing wrong? Secondly, but maybe more importantly, in a 2.5gb file, how does Xvid look compared to x264?

XviD will look worse - the compression ratio isn't as good.

I'm thinking that DivX video in an MPEG-4 container might not be supported - try using an AVI container instead. Also, XviD is very hit and miss on the PS3, you may have issues with that in particular. If you can, use DivX.

Thanks. That's exactly the info I was looking for. I'll test it out tonight, but looks like most likely, I'll just stick with x264 since I am picky about image quality.
