It was suggested to me that I bring my computer out into my garage with the door open to see if the cold air would help me OC higher. This would tell me if i should spend the money on better cooling to OC my components higher.
It is currently 0 degrees F here (i live in alaska), and I am a bit worried that the cold will hurt my monitor or my computer. Is it safe to run the computer when the air temp is that cold? Could it damage any of my drives/fans?

ok guys, seriously haha i don't want to freeze my fans shut or anything. true 0 would be very cold indeed, wonder how far i could oc 😉
 
No the cold wont damage your vital computer components but i would rip out those fans. However what you would have to worry about is condensation. Is it so warm in your house that you need to do this.

This will not increase how far you OC unless you are limited by heat. Please post your Ambient Temps of House, Case Temp (Idle/Load), and CPU Temp (Idle/Load)

yeah i know, thats the point of the experement...to see if my video card can actually go higher if its cooled better, so i wont waste any money on an NV5. right now it's 63 degrees F in my house, and my idle cpu temp is 35C, load is 52C. idle videocard is 46C, load is 75C. my case temp is about 30C idle, and not much higher then that load because of my 6 fans.

What could I do to prevent condensation?
 
There is nothing you can do to prevent condensation besides buying exotic or water cooling.

You are not limited by heat at all. If your temps were around 70C for CPU Load and Case was like 40C then i would say you need new cooling and buy doing that you will achieve higher overclocks.

Something seems wrong. My case with 4 Panaflo Low Speeds running at 1/3 speed idles at 20C (22Load with all fans remaining at 1/3) and my ambient temp in my house is 69F. 6 Fans are not needed. How are they configured? You might be able to rip one out and get better temps.

i dont care about my CPU, thats maxed out period w/o going to extreme voltages and my temps are fine there. i'm not too concerned with noise either, because my WD Hd is by far the loudest thing in my system (high pitched squeel) and i'm not going to replace that for a while. plus i wear headphones.
my fans are setup at follows:
2 intake (controlled by Fan Only Connectors on PSU)
1 side panel intake with its own thermal probe stuck in GPU heatsink
2 PSU fans
2 exaust fans with thermal diodes under CPU bracket

my 6800GT on the other hand, i am pretty sure is temp limited. i have seen quite a few people with stock cooling not able to get over ~405/1080 (what i am at right now), but when they get an NV5 they can do 430/1150 and with a voltmod can do 450/1200.
those are just examples, but you get the idea.

If there is nothing i can do about condensation, scratch that idea...i'm not going to risk getting water all over my PSU insides/mobo/hds/videocard etc. ill just get an NV5 and see what magic it can work (hopefully).
 
if you own a Prescott that garage will be a nice and toasty 70*F in no time! 😉

No your GPU is not limited at all. That is limited by voltages which if need be can be overcome by flashing a BIOS (Void Warranty), or doing a Volt Mod (Also void warranty). THe most you MIGHT get if it is limited a little (i doubt it) is a couple mhz. Not even a tangible difference.

The side fan is not needed and is doing nothing for you but creating so much air inyour case that it cannot exhaust it fast enough. I would uplug it. PSU fans do not count as case fans, they are in the PSU.

Condensation will build up. If you have ever parked a dry car outside during the winter. When you come out in the morning most of the time it is covered in ice. Moisture in the air, condensation etc. Not much better in your garage except much warmer.

Just leave it where it is.

i didnt mention this, but i DID a voltmod as well as tried Thug's modded bios. all it did was make my temps go up about 10C.
i won't do the garage thing, i dont want to risk it. i think im going to get an NV5 though, nothing to loose really. i have a hard time beliveing it, but JBDan had similar results with his 6800GT and stock cooling. then he got an nv5/thug's bios (1.4v mod) and he got 36MHz more core and higher memory.
 
The condensation could be a problem. I'd stick it out in the cold for a few minutes and check if any condensation forms before I turn the power on.
 
THe BIOS gave it to him. Unless he was hitting around 90C he was not heat limited.

You really dont since your warranty is already VOIDed.

Different cards OC differently is the best i can say. You have simply hit a wall.

i WAS hitting around 90C with RTHDRIBL and the voltmod, thats the thing. for $30, i'm going to try the NV5 and see if i can nuke that "wall".

I just bought 2 panaflo low speeds, but they dont come with a connector to hook up to the psu. I tried plugging them into the mobo (chfan2,3) but they dont turn on. Yeah this is a noob questioin and off topic, but what do i need to make these things work?

Also you should be fine sitting in your garage, I mean people vapochill/phase cool their pc's and that brings it to negative degrees.
 
Dont worry about it. I assume you have a two pin connector. All that you did there is put it on the wrong two pins. Just put it on the other two pins.

that just cools the proc/videocard; not the whole computer.
