This card looks identical to a Trendware TEW-223PI that I bought from Newegg. It works fine at very close range, but starts dropping the connection at 20' through 1 wall unless the antennae are very carefully positioned. This would be a good deal only for a system that will be close to the base unit.

Hmm, all the other PCI cards I've seen has that heatsink thingy except this one. Why's that? Is that metal piece on wifi PCI cards and on TV cards even a heatsink?

It's not a heatsink, it's a RF shield.

I don't know if that's why mine doesn't have good range, but if I ever get motivated I might bend up a piece of metal/shield and attach it... then again I'd probably move to 802.11g before I got THAT motivated, so there'd be no point. When I bought mine I was just happy that it was so small, was going into a flexATX case, but it didn't come with a low-profile mounting bracket so I had to carve out one.

if getting 802.11b for a desktop, I recommend two options:

1: get a 3-6ft antenna cable extender....get that antenna out from behind your metal case that emits EMI

2: get a USB 802.11b solution.....then you can just put the antenna just about anywhere ya like....
