XT and overdrive?

Hello, new here. I was wondering about the overdrive feature. With a 9600XT, how much of an improvement do you think will be seen? Just a few more FPS? And if you have this card, what was the highest clock you seen?

Great forums.

It's very nominal, thus far. They've said with the 4.1 Catalyst drivers, they've done a better job with it, but mine went from 411MHz mem to 418MHz with OD enabled (hardly an overclock). I saw a small improvement, but not enough to even mess with it much. The other problem is that it's reporting that the card is around the 73C range at idle(whereas my 5950 runs at 45C at idle), and that bugs me :|

Since many of the non ATI 9600XT's do not have Overdrive implemented, I can't help but wonder why. It is my understanding that Overdrive only raises the core but not the memory and if the core gets too hot it will lower it down. Personally, I think it is better to forget about Overdrive and rather get a 9600XT that comes with faster stock operating memory speed. It will provide the same performance increase as Overdrive without overheating the GPU and you could still gain more by raising the core a little with an OC utility.

Ronin, the core speed is 500MHz stock. Whats up with the 400s?

Cockeyed, what they're saying is with future Catalyst drivers, memory will be included with OD. Anyway, I've only seen a 27Mhz increase running at 38C. Any performance gain is probably the placebo effect 😛

you realise that nvidia cards downclock themselves in 2d right?

I also noticed a 27MHz OC with Overdrive enabled.... I have turned off the OD and just have it OC'd at 576 core and 333 mem.

Ronin probably has a 9800XT. Overdrive doesn't give you too much extra performance; it seems more gimmick than necessary feature at this point.
