XPXP - help me upgrade from win98se to win XP please...

Hi all,

I just formatted my 40 gig drive, installed win 95, upgraded to win 98se via upgrade cd and then installed all the drivers for my home-built pc. (GeForce 2 MX drivers, sound blaster live drivers, nic drivers) I want to go to WIN XP for the stability and interface, and have the upgrade CD, but I'm concerned that the update won't go smoothly. After I installed my drivers, I then loaded about ten programs (photoshop elements 2.0, InDesign, BreezeBrowser (for digital cameras), CounterStrike, a few demo games, Windows Media Center 9.0 for Win98se and maybe a couple of others. If I upgrade to WIN XP via upgrade CD (gonna use dad's copy to test XP 🙂 ), will my system be likely to operate well? Or is it only really stable when doing a full install from the complete version of XXP onto a recently wiped hard drive?

All help, suggestions, etc is really welcome and thanks in advance for the help,

GS

Give it a try. I would have waited to install any software, but that is beside the point. Will 98se upgrade to XP, that is the question. I don't know, but in the older upgrade series, you had to have immediately adjacent OS's to upgrade.

i wouldent try it id just do a clean install because Xp is NTFS and 98se is Fat32. you can run XP on Fat but i wouldent recomend it

Upgrading from Win98 to Win XP I would give it a try. If it installs and works with all your programs then keep it as is. Nothing to lose except about 45 minutes or less of your time.

Make sure you run the XP compatibility program on the XP install CD first. If your computer hardware passes the compatibility test then installing XP should go smoothly for you.

I upgraded to XP Pro over Win ME with perfect success. My XP computer runs faster than a friend of mine computer does and we both installed XP except he did a clean format and install.

A clean install is not all what some on Anandtech make it out to be.
