xpress 200 chipset (MSIRS480-IL) or x300 se?

Which one is better? Im debating whether to get the rs480 or another cheap mobo with x300 se. I am going/want to play hl2, farcry at medium settings at the least. THanks.

you aren't going to be doing much farcry or hl2 with either of those... get an x600 or nvidia 6200 at least

Agreed...both the Xpres200 and X300se suck for gmaing, its not their purpose. You could get a 6200 for around $80 (NOT A TUBROCACHE) and unluck the extra 4 pipes, then overclock it...should be the performance of a 6600GT.

correction: it will never be close to the performance of the 6600gt even overclocked and unlocked. you would need to oc the memory 450mhz(A BASICALLY 2X INCREASE) just to meet up with the performance of a 6600gt. it might be 85% as fast though if you're lucky.

the geforce 6600gt is around 10-15% faster in older games(call of duty and UT2k4, etc but newer games, is around 60-70% faster than a stock 6600, or 50-60% faster than a oced 6200, all unlocked and oc'ed.

the best cards are able to get around 500-550 core and 650-700 memory or around a good 25-35% slower even overclocked and unlcoked than the 6600gt in DOOMIII or FarCry

A 6600GT is an 8-pipe card, so if you unlock the 6200 and can OC to the same speeds, woudlnt the cards peform the same? Does the 6600GT core have other enhancements that makes it faster clock for clock?

Actually, the rs480 is perfect for light gaming. I love this board

oh man, dont you get it? the card is never gonna oc to the same speeds! thats a 2x increase in memory speed and it'll never hit that mark! the best i've ever seen was a 6200 hitting around 700, and those are handpicked review samples. that's still 300mhz off the 6600gt speeds and though the core can oc around 550mhz, that 50mhz core increse over the 6600gt is not gonna make up for a 300mhz memory defiency.

also, the unlock is not gurantted. it is only around 60-70%

oh shit...lol, your right. I for some reason was thinking the GT was 5000/700, but its 500/1000. That was a brain fart on my part.

6200 (non turbocache) = 4 pipes core/mem 300/500
6200 (non turbocache) = 8 pipes (4 unlocked) core/mem 300/500
6200 (non turbocache) max o/c core/mem 550/700 (on a good day)

6600GT stock = 8 pipes core/mem 500/1000

An unlocked 6200 or 6600 vanilla can never equal the performance of a 6600GT.
Much like a 6800nu with 128MB DDR can never equal the performance of a 6800GT even when the pipes are unlocked and o/c'd.

I hope this explains it Viper.

Ya. Most of that I knew....I just had a brain fart on the memory speed of the 6600GT.

And can you people please stop the threadcrapping and turning this thread into a discussion about cards way out of my range and come back to he topic? But thanks for all the responses.

amd64 2800+($120)[ocs well]
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=19-103-452&DEPA=0 (hmm, seems no more s939 2800+ at newegg...)
SOLTEK "SL-K8AN2E-GR" NVIDIA nForce3 250Gb Chipset Motherboard For AMD Socket 754 CPU -RETAIL $75.00[nforce3, cheap, oc's well]
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-180-061&depa=1 (very popular board)

then if you're lucky, you can either get a 9500(non pro) and try to softmod to 9700 for around $50 off of ebay, a 9600pro sometimes goes for $65 or a ti4xxx series goes for around $55 to $85.(ti4xxx series are as fast as 9600pro but only support direct x 8.1 instead of 9.0 and dont handle AA or AF nearly as well.)

your best choice is a softmoddable 9500(softmodded to 9700pro, is faster than a 9600pro, but if the softmod fails, the 9500 will be slower than the 9600pro) or a 9600pro

edit: when buying, be sure to read the softmod threads. not all cards are even capable of modding to 9700pro and some that are capable are still not able to mod sucessfully.

AnandTech ATI Radeon Xpress 200 vs X300SE benches

Shows HL2, DIII, UT2004, Halo and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. X300SE is definitely faster but Xpress 200 is playable at 640x480 and sort of playable at 800x600 (barely). Personally I'd stick with the Xpress 200 and save your money for a better card later. X300SE isn't THAT much better than the built-in ATI IGP to warrant actually spending money on it.

Ease up. No one is thread crapping, that's in the FS/T forum.

Here's what you said:

Now if you aren't willing to pay $80.00 for a video card then don't even post that, okay?

We're trying to help you, but have the video card be the cheapest component in your system isn't going to make for a gaming machine of any kind.

I was gonna say that. Why don't you go with 754 and save some good dough toward the video card. This is definitely better than a 939 rig.
