XPpro users: What wireless PCI NIC are you using?

I am trying to find a more compatible network card for a PC downstairs. Currently, I was using a POS Netgear MA111 USB worthless NIC to connect to a WRT54G wireless router. I've decided not to fight that battle any more and seek out a PCI-based wireless NIC.

Unfortunately, I have nothing to base my decision on in terms of reliability, compatability, and user friendliness.

This will go into a PC based on an Abit IS7 motherboard and Intel 2.4B running XP Pro with SP2. I am a little surprised at how pricey some of these PCI wireless NICs are. That POS USB NIC was $22 more than a year ago. Of course, it is a POS.

If the Linksys PCI WR54G wireless card a fairly safe choice?
 
I've only ever used the cisco cards based on Atheros chipsets. I'm probably biased, but I still say "cisco" for features/functionality. But I'm also a glutton for punishment. I'm thinking about building a radias server so I can implement EAP-TLS on my home network 😀

I haven't heard of that brand before, but if the detachable antenna is good quality, that could be worth $20 just by itself. 🙂

Neither had I, but I was searching based on chipset. I've also been unable to find them locally. 🙁
 
Belkin 802.11g PCI card working for me here. I did have a USB 802.11b device...the PCI (even w/ only the attached antenna) is MUCH better. WPA enabled, working fine.

Hmm?. It is hard to determine, may be if you would explain in technical terms what is wrong with your current setting it will be easier to give you s solid answer.

PCI card is not an Automatic Magic solution for all alleged POS.

Usually equipment from the same manufacturer tend to have the best compatibility so LinkSys would be a safe bet.
If you don't lilke LinkSys' price tags, I strongly suggest DLink. (except their DI524 wireless router)

I guess I should tell my netgear and apple cards to stop working with the linksys router. 😛
 
Actually, I've seen several cases where equipment from different manufacturers worked better. Go figure.

Neither had I but got one of their PCMCIA WiFi cards and it's been 100% for me. Never a problem, so a friend bought two of them for his work and home laptop and says they both work great. Their low price made me wonder at first but so far not a problem. I like the fact that their PCI card has an external antenna. That would help in certain locations.
 
trendnet ftw!! i'm running a trendnet 11g pci card in my pc and i put an 11b pci card in my mom's comp. both have a strong signal. 🙂

just had problems with a linksys g pci card. had to rma it. what a nightmare... but i do love my wrt54g. <3
