there still one thing that concerns me w/ those things and like playesr...

battery consumption and fragility...i own a rio500 right now and i can pretty much toss it again the wall, etc. and it's fine..not to mention it runs for about 10hrs off a single AA battery.

gotta admit tho, the ipod looks damn sweet. (a little big for my liking tho)

the reason battery life doesn't seem to be as bad a problem with this drive is that it has a massive buffer (I think it was 30 megs or something) that it stores MP3s on and spins the drive down for that 30 minutes or so.. :)

Bastards. Apple finally displays a product I'm even -remotely- interested in, and then leaves it tied to their ridiculously overpriced and underperforming platforms. I actually wasn't too dismayed with the $399 msrp, but not developing code for Winbloze is a big mistake.

it SAYS it lasts 10 hours...now half that, and that's probably close to what you'll get in real life...

they test it w/ no backlight on, volume at zero, etc...it's a joke...my rio 500 can allegedly play 13hrs straight of a single AA battery...can i realistically get that? - hell no..

ask any laptop user how much battery life they can muster out of their batteries.

as for the 30mb buffer, u're then saying that it has 30mb of ram (or flash) onboard?? - that might be interesting...it's also interesting to note how much power it takes to initially spin a drive up, then having it nearly idle for 30min...

the product is nice, but i still don't like the idea of a mobile hdd....or proprietary battery packs....

You can get an Archos jukebox 6000 right now for $169 at best buy or circuit city. It's the same as the Ipod but holds 6 megs and is bigger. The ipod sells for $400! The archos runs for up to 8 hours with mah1500's, but you could probably put in better batteries and get even longer life.
