I've been hearing a lot of buzz about the new 45nm cpus being able to overclock to 4ghz using just the stock cooler (probably one very hot case, no pun intended). I'm currently using an XP90 from my s939 rig and would like to bring it over to my new rig as I retire the old one. Anyone have experiences with this so far? Thanks, I plan to OC as much as I can.

What fan? or are you open to replacing it? what case is it in? what motherboard and ram are you getting?

I already have a zalman fan on it, antec 900, gigabyte ds3r and 2gb ocz gold ddr2 800. I'm willing to replace the fan (unless it costs 40 bucks, which is unlikely haha). I just want to save some money wherever I can. I also like the look of the xp90 and how it isn't heavy as the larger coolers. It keeps my temps of my 3800x2 @ 2.4ghz around 32 idle and 42 load. If I HAVE to buy a cooler, I was looking at the nirvana 120 which was reviewed on Anandtech, but I'd rather just get the bracket in order to mount this one over to the new system and just use the stock cooler for the amd.

Without knowing the specs of the zalman I would not and could not gaurintee it but, all things considered, I'd say it's quite likely. The XP series is actually pretty finiky, I found with my xp-120 that I still use and love that anything over 60cfm actually degrades performance and there is no difference between 50 and 60 cfm. The sweet spot for my xp-120 is actually right about 48cfm. I've never played with the xp-90 for more that a couple days but, it looks like it is the same way but, you'd have to really play with it to find it's exact sweet spot.

What'd you do, tweak the fan speed and just read the temps?

Basically. I actually use a custom made rheostat with 3.3v and 12v inputs that i've hatched at every volt so i can click it to 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 or 12v or i can do sweeps between, the rheostat I used is actually one onkyo had specced from some company that I was able to get directly from them. It's used in their highest end amplifiers and cost me like $30 just for the rheostat but, it's acurate to about 1/8th of a volt anywhere in the sweep. For temperature monitoring I have some temperature probes that I've added small potentiometers so I can adjust them refrenced to a lazer thermal detector I was able to get from the fire department though a relative. All in all it's rediculously over-done but, I'm nuts so, no one really cares accept that I'm accurate.

Wow...............I have a switch that I push with my thumb and then my fan goes *vrooooooooooooom* or *vroom*.

Going from what you are saying, I may just work with this one for now since I should be okay and if I hit any walls, I'll work from there. Thanks!

Oh, one more question, any fan recommendations =)

92mm:Scythe Kaze-jyu's or there is a delta three blade out there that's a little scarry, used three for a friends build and I put grills on both sides two and on the HSF. Didn't get my finger in it but, it sheared off a floppy power connector like it wasn't there.

120mm: Scythe Slipstream 1200rpm, if too loud or too much air it can always be turned down a litte, at 9v mine run right about 790-830rpm. (another lazer toy. though I used to use one with just a little lightbulb and a sensor for model plane engines and rotors, i wonder where that got to...)
