XP64 -> XP -> Vista Ultimate

Since Vista is unable to upgrade from XP64 to Vista, I'm wondering if it is possible for me to "downgrade" from XP64 back to XP Pro and then upgrade to Vista Ultimate? Such as me putting the XP Pro CD in and "installing" to XP Pro, etc? Or am I just completely screwed and having to format and then reinstall everything?
