XP64 or Vista64 for gaming rig

I can't decide which OS to go with. Does XP64 still beat out Vista64 in gaming benchmarks? I can't find any recent articles comparing the two. Which is the better 64bit gaming OS?

I would agree with others as far as driver support goes for Vista.

Interesting. Seems to make the biggest difference when using Crossfire, which the OP does. I guess that makes the case clear for him.

Wait I've got a chart, no not really but why take someone elses word for it ?
you can get a trial of xp 64 and try vista and see for yourself
I have a dual core amd 64 and things didn't really click in XP 64 until I got the AMD patch from AMD.

Also driver support is one thing and driver pain in the butt to get them installed if not signed is another thing. That is if we are really trying to get the benches.

I went with Vista 64 and it's going good so far. It nice having evaluation copies to test things out. One problem I've run into is Riva Tuner. It doesn't allow me to adjust my video cards fan speeds. After researching it seems to be a RivaTuner Vista 64 issue. Because of this my cards are running at default speeds AND default fluctuating fan speeds. I wouldn't mind be able to peg the fan speeds at 45-50%. ATITool doesn't work either unfortunately. Any other apps that will let me adjust fan speeds that work in Vista 64 AND CrossFire?

Vista 64 is most certainly better for a modern system. New drivers for new hardware will be written for Vista64 for sure. Not so certain for XP64.

Let me ask you several multiple choice questions in response to your question.

(1) At some point in the near future there will be a cutting-edge, must have game which will be exclusively: (a) DX9 or (b) DX10. (2) The biggest advances in APIs, providing both faster performance and superior sound and graphics, over the next year will be in: (a) DX9 or (b) DX10.

The answers are 1:b; and 2:b. Giving up 10 FPS with SLI right now is a pretty good trade off for being able to take advantage of all the coming improvements in my book.

I voted Vista 64-Bit. I made my transition from XP to Vista right about the time Vista came out and at first it took some getting used to but I soon started to really enjoy it. I then moved up to 4GB and decided it was time to move to 64-Bit to play all the latest games and I've used it ever since on both my rigs. I love the speed and I haven't had any problems with drivers and such.

Voted Vista myself but I'm damn surprised to see it winning 26 to 5, even if we are comparing x64 to x64. 😵

In the context of a 64 bit to 64 bit comparison, Vista is the clear cut better OS, especially since you can't hammer on (supposed) incompatibilities on Vista64 without having to say the same thing about XP64.

Pretty sure an XP32 versus Vista 32/64 questiopn would get different results.
