which would you use and why?
I want to use my computer for gaming, and running programs such as solidworks.

If 64bit versions of programs come out, will they only run on xp64?

Also, i make vb programs sometimes, if i make it in xp64, will it run on a normal xp machine? thanks!

This belongs in Operating Systems :p

I would buy 32bit simply b/c more drivers for it.

If you really want 64bit programs (Solidworks) get 64bit Vista, amount of mature 64bit drivers is much bigger than xp64. xp64 was never finished properly.

64 bit programs only run on 64bit platform, I would think.

vb progs: as long as you compile the code for 32 bit platform, it will run on both 32bit and 64bit

The benefits of 64 bit appear to be limited to being able to use more RAM. Other than that, it's starting to look like 64 bit's never going to become mainstream. I'd stick with 32 bit for the better drivers.

I wouldn't buy XP right now; it's approaching EOL and you will get much longer use out of Vista. I use the 64-bit Vista and it's great. Don't worry about going 64 bit with Vista as pretty soon *all* Microsoft OS'es will be 64-bit only.
