That is something that I am very interested in since I"m a heavey user of Adobe AfterEffects and several other apps that have been shown to benefit greatly from SSE2.

The article explicitly stated that 333 FSB will be launched on October 7. However, it made no mention of when the Barton will bow; however, it is reasonable to assume that the Barton will debut on October 7 as well. Let's hope it isn't a paper launch as the 2600+ was.

It is not yet known whether or not the Barton has SSE2. However, I believe it will, as Intel is licensing SSE2.

I'm inclined to doubt it. The author made a point of mentioning the ThroughBred core specifically when stating October 7. If he meant that to pertain to the Barton as well he wouldnt have specifically stated Throughbred but instead referred to all 333MHz FSB AXP's.
This is of course operating under the assumption the The Inquirer is correct- they do thrive upon rumours so the validity is unknown.

That is still AMD's official position on SSE2 support. I don't believe AMD will make the slight architectural changes to enable SSE2 on the Barton.
It would only serve to considerably lengthen the validation process for a processor they need to hurry out as soon as is viable. Also, they've shown little desire to switch engineers off the Hammer series over to the Barton core- AMD certainly doesnt have the resources to dedicate to advancing two relatively advanced architctures simultaneously along with their other projects.

Will current KT333 chipsets support this?

All the articles I've read so far claim the KT333 chipset based mainboards should support 333MHz FSB with a BIOS update. I don't believe VIA has officially acknowledged support as yet however.


One wonders how this will impact they supposed 3000-3400+ ClawHammer launch. Unless the Barton 3000+ is low availability/short-life only or hits excessive heat plateau's it seems unlikely AMD would confuse the market with two different 3000+ AthlonXP's.

The KT333, the SiS 745, the KT400, and the nForce 2 all supposedly support it.

What is the actual clock speed for these chips? I don't remember the conversion. It probably hasn't changed again since they just changed it with the 2200+ and over chips.

I tihnk i'll be dropping this T-brid soon for a new 2600+ or so when these get out there...

Definately good news for many Socket A Board owners, but maybe this is an indication that Hammer will be hit until Q1'03 and AMD is making sure they can keep up when Intel launches the 3.06 Northwood in Q4? In any case, this is definately good stuff, if its true.

Actually they have changed the scale. The 2400+ is 2.0GHz, the 2600+ is 2.133 GHz. I'd guess the 2800+ to be 2.266, and the 3000+ to be 2.4GHz.

Does anyone know where that will leave us Dual AthlonMP users? Does anyone know if there will be higher clocked AthlonMP's to be used with the current Dual Socket A boards? I have 6 Dual Athlon systems and am hoping that the ceiling will go higher than a 2600MP, or am I going to just have to wait for Hammer and completely switch over?

Barton is an outsourced program. Don't expect UMC to deliver the Barton cores on time. They never do.

I suggest you inform Intel of that. They only said 3.0 by the end of the year.
