XP2500 Overclocking results?

How does one tell what week the CPU is from? Here's a not-very-sharp-but-readable photo of mine:

Ignore the sticker, it's from the (swedish) shop I got it from. Is the "11" at the far right the week of manufacture?

You've got a 2003 Week 08 Barton. The mfg. date is the 4 digits after the stepping code "AQUCA".

oh, thanks for the info. Not that I know why I would want a processor from a specific week or anything

I'll do some reading up on that tonight. From plowing through previous chizow postings I get the impression it has to do with stability while overclocking, and for AMD later production dates ususally indicate higher stability, right?

To bring this back on topic a bit: Running the 2500+ at 177x12.5 (FSB limited by PC2700 memory) is very stable so far with vcore at 1.700. I got an error in Prime95 after about 2 hours with vcore at 1.650. This is with a Vantec Aeroflow C7040 cooler, so nothing fancy here. Temps are steady at 47 degrees celcius for the CPU after what must be 5 hours of prime95 alongside CD ripping and web surfing. With a more heavy duty cooler and higher clocked memory I think 2300MHz is well within reach and the real enthusiasta should probably be able to get 2400 out of it on air. But such a system would be far too loud for my taste.

I am really liking this Barton 2500+. I now have it in my home machine (8RDA+) and running very stable at 11.5 by 200mhz @ 1.775v with memory frequency at sync and 5-2-2-2 timings. I paid $180 for this 2500+. Geez, down to $140 now and lower. That sure makes the 2500+ much more attractive.

The 2500+ @2300mhz seems a touch faster than my 2100+ at 2360mhz, but I haven't run any benchmarks to test that.

Yeah mines a 0308 barton - seems to clock well - i have now managed to get it too 2640 stable - it keeps getting better - not as good as my 2700+ Tbreb B, which is cooking along at 3037Ghz

Nice but not all that stable LOL (crashes after 8 hours of playing games)

I will post up some more results when i get them

The bartons i think should keep getting better - although i cant see most breaking the 2.7Ghz barrier for a while - but hey - 2.6Ghz is faster than a P4 3.06 (and costs less)

One other thing - jeff - the MSI kt400 chipset mobo will not allow you to use multi's over 13x and FSB over 180 !!! It has a fixed 1/5 divider which means the PCI and AGP bus speeds will be well out of shape !! I replaced my MSI KT4 Ultra with an Abit NF7-S mobo to get my speeds UP UP UP

Hope you have some better luck clockin your Barton - too be honest i dont need the vapo at those speeds - a good quality heatsink and fan or water cooling would be just as good - getting my barton towards 2.7Ghz slowly - i may a newer barton when the cores have been refined a little better - mine is quite an early barton - as such it doesnt clock too well - probably due to the extra cache

I will get back to you will some more sandra scores as sson as it hit the 2.7GHz mark

With an nForce2 board, and a barton core... what multipliers will be available if I don't physically modify the CPU? only 12.5 and below? or all of them?

Jeff7181: I'm using a 2500+, an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe rev 1.04 with the 1003 BIOS and I'm just getting the multipliers up to 12.5. The others show in the list in the BIOS, but they don't work. I was checking some other forums and this seems to be the case for everyone. I did see mention of some Epox board that had all multipliers unlocked though, but that report wasn't very detailed so I'm not sure what to think.

Hmmm... ok... might be limited in how much I can overclock then... cause I'll be using bargain RAM like I am now... it'll be PC2700, but not high quality stuff like a lot of people use here

Jeff: I'm using TwinMOS PC2700 (333MHz) rated at CAS2.5 but I'm currently running it at 360MHz CAS2, so there is hope

I can do this with a 12.5 multiplier to get 2250MHz, but then I need to up the vcore and since I'm mainly going for a quiet rig I'll settle for slightly less. I did some crude tests compressing a 74 minute WAV file to 192kbps MP3 using LAME 3.93, and here are my results:

166x11 - 225 seconds
166x12 - 207 seconds
180x11 - 210 seconds
177x12,5 - 188 seconds

so, if this is anything to go by (which it probably isn't), there is quite a performance gain even with the stock multipliers.

Wow, nice OC there. That's huge from the 1826mhz stock for the 2500+. That's not on air is it?

Just got my XP2500 and installed it today with my PC2700 RAM. New benchmark scores are posted in my profile... and I have it running at 2083 Mhz just by bumping up the multiplier, I've yet to mess with the FSB. It's also running at 1.750 volts, MBM reports 1.79. It's running idle between 113 and 114. I may upgrade the fan on the heatsink to get some more heat out of there... that's a little hotter idle than I'd like to see.
BTW... in default speeds, the processor and RAM scored 5,500 and 4,200 respectively.

Actually... it's unstable at 2083... 166x12.5... I ran Prime 95 and it error out on the very first test it did. So I set the multiplier at 12 and it's been running fine. I'll have new benchmarks at the current speed in a little bit.
Little disappointing... I hoped to get 2083 out of it... but maybe my nForce2 board that's coming next week will help with that.

WELL... it errored out at 166x12 also... so I set it back to it's defaults, now I'm running Prime 95 to see if it'll do it again... I did buy cheap RAM, maybe that's the cause... we'll see.

Well... right as I said that, it errored out again... said possible hardware failure, please see readme.txt. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Jeff, that's not good at all... if you're running multiple sticks of RAM, try removing all but one. If it still errors, try using the other stick. If it still gives you errors, wait for the new board...

What heatsink are you using? 114F when idle seems a little high.

At stock speed, it's running 107 idle with an SK-7 heatsink and a cheap 4500 RPM 70 mm fan.
It just errored out again at stock speeds... at Test 17 it got an Illegal Sumout... and the readme file says that could be software related... I'll run the memory test and see what that says.

Memory passed Memtest... so... I guess it's most likely the CPU right? Would this be reason to RMA?
I'm going to install and play Battlefield 1942 and see if that crashes or anything. I have my video card overclocking set to a reasonable speed... Gainward's "enhanced" setting which is guaranteed to work.

yeah, if it can't pass prime95 at the stock clocking something is wrong for sure. find out what the RMA policy is for your retailer (I'm from sweden and our laws are probably quiet different from yours) and if possible, wait until the new mobo arrives. at least that's what I'd do.
