xp1800 acting weird ?!?! HELP!! updated read bottom

ok so i just do a normal reboot.. and it doesnt reboot.. video drops, no beeps and the power/HD leds dont go on.. im like wtf. i havean xp1800 not overclocked with stock and arctic silver on it. i tried a friends cpu in the mobo, worked fine so i know its the cpu. WTF? what happened!
 
If your processor doesn't work at all...You either got a defective processor (less likely), or you broke the core...
 
Chk for any burned marks on the CPU. If no...try cleaning the AS2 mess & try again. Chk also the core...c if its chiped....ff still fail....RMA time.
 
Are you sure no thermal compound was on it at all????

I had a 1.4 that after I swapped HS's it under clocked itself..... It was AS compound very very little AS
that bridged some pathways....

Clean it all off again and re-apply the Thermal compound.....

Brave soul using the AMD stock HSF unit.... I swapped my 2100+ stock HSF while it was still in the
AMD package AX-7 just looked nice and shiny.... Oh well Good luck
 
Clean out the Artic Silver and apply thinly on the core. Some of the your bridges are smeared with the goop, try to clean them out.
 
As others said, clean it up and see if it will boot. That is way too much AS on that core, a thin nearly translucent coat is all that's needed.
 
what should i use to clean it.. regular cloth didnt do anything.. and all that AS2 wasnt all over the place before it died. but maybe some came off the core and got somehwere.. yeah what should i use to clean it .
 
If you place to much AS on there when placing heatsink on it, it may squeeze excess out and onto the bridges and cause it to short out...
 
yeah i cleaned it and it still doesnt work. yay!

and i have no money/no job..now im hella depressed/pissed. anything else before i go killmyself ( joke )

I had the exact same thing happen with my 1800+ It worked great for a few months and then it started shows signs of having problems. The problems intensified and it finally wouldn't boot at all anymore.

I had a retail version, sent it to AMD, and got a replacement a few days later... If you have the retail version call AMD and get it replaced... 🙂
 
Best thing to clean Arctic Silver off of a CPU is WD40 and Q-Tips, spray the WD40 onto the Q-Tip and use Q-Tip to remove AS, then clean the CPU with Alcohol or Windex and Q-Tip to remove the WD40 residue. You can always tell if a Athlon fried by either smelling it, they really smell burn't when they fry, and looking on the bottom inbetween the resistor packs to see if it is darkend or burnt looking, or if they look like they have leaked an oily substance. I have a fried 1900XP that has a slightly burnt mark between the resistor packs on the bottom and all of the packs look like they have leaked-shiny around them, looks wet. Hope you bought a retail CPU, RMA time, otherwise, looks like your buying a new CPU.
 
OMFG i just bought a new AMD XP 1800+ (same cpu) and so i put it in the mobo... still nothing works.. and i know the mobo is fine cause i tried a friends amd xp 1600 in it and it worked.. does my mobo no longer accept 1800?!!?

and why doesnt the power LED come on... the HD one stays solid tho.. there should be a meaning to this somewhere?
 
There seems to be an assumption here that the processor is at fault. I don't believe that this is the case since most motherboards will provide an error code stating processor failure. Since you have no power LED I don't blieve the processor is at fault. Here are some steps that might help to solve your problem:
1.Disconnect non-esential compeonents. Disconnect everything from the motherboard such as IDE and floppy cables, all PCI cards and any USB/firewire devices.
2.Reseat everything. Ram, processor, video card, ATX power connector. Completely remove it. Inspect it, and replace it.
3.Reset the BIOS. Unplug the computer and leave the jumper in clear mode for a while.
If you try these steps you should at least get some sort of beep code. There should be no instance where the power LED doesn't come on if hooked up right.
I have seen some unusuall cases where someone had a system that would not power on. Nothing would happen when pressing the power button. It should have powered on and provided a CPU error message but it didn't. Completely removing the CPU and replacing it in the motherboard completely resolved the issue so it's certainly worth trying with all your components.

did it all, nothing worked. so i just bought a new cpu and new mobo since it seems both died outa no where.... freak accident
