I bought my 1700+ in late January 2003 from NewEgg (great dealer) and found a program and guide last night that will tell you when your AMD CPU was built and what the REAL speed/rating is of the AMD CPU you purchased.

If they are correct, and I do not doubt them (yet), my 1700+ was originally a 2700+ but rebagged and sold to me as a 1700+!!!

That is one heck of a deal, $50 for an almost $200 processor!

Here is the site:

Guide to choosing an Athlon XP Thoroughbred Revision B

I did post this earlier but it got moved to the CPU/Processors Overclocking Forum for obvious reasons. Still, I found it great (hot) information....

I just wish they (newegg) could give some certainty as to the revision you'll receive. From reports and convo's, it appears to be about 40% tbred b's and 40% tbred a's, with a margin of error of 20% :)

That said, I am thiiiiiiiis close to upgrading my k6-3 to an athlon.

This was @ $50 a couple of days ago.

Buy the cheapest chip of the latest series, and overclock it like crazy. Too bad Newegg still seems to ship a mix of older and newer chips Tbreds. Still, most cheap Pricewatch listings don't say if a vendor is shipping Tbreds, or old Palominos.

Got a Newegg B a few weeks back, a JIUHB 0302, doing 2012 MHz with a $5 GC68 cooler after bumping the vcore up to 1.8 volts. The later Tbred B's are reported to overclock much better, and the earlier A's don't do as well.

there were some posts a while back that said Newegg and Nutrend were both owned by the same company. If that is true then maybe the service is as good, but I have never ordered from them.

I've ordered a CPU from Nutrend. No problems. The two vendors are rather similar! Another possible relative is Multiwave.com (or is it mwave.com?).

My 1600XP (non-throughbred, AGOIA, I think) running at 2000XP speed sometimes would get as high as 69C on my Epox 8K7A. This usually happened on a very hot day with my CPU doing some pedal-to-the-metal stuff. Surprisingly, it didn't crash too much when it was like this. I recently got a 60MM to 80MM converter and put a bigger (and quieter) fan on this same CPU and it runs 59C under extreme duress on hot days. Doing everyday stuff, it is about 45c.

So if you are worried about 40c being too high, that is kind of strange for AMD chips which run hot. The fact they run hot is what makes them so good. P4s run cooler because Intel puts in some fancy cooling throttle back stuff, which actually hurts the performance of the CPU. AMD said screw the limiters and their CPUs will go pedal-to-the-metal as long as you want, kind of like a horse running until it drops dead.

Wish I knew this earlier today. I just sold a T'bred b 1800 for $70, and according to your site it was really a 2700+ downgraded. :frown:

I know. I'm just trying to squeeze as much as I can. I'm changing my case pretty soon to have a better air flow. It does 2.2ghz at 60c but craps out on prime95. The heat is too much. I need better cooling for oc. :(

Just out of curiosity, I went through the "feedback left by buyers at NewEgg for March. There were 36 comments so far for the month.

The "breakdown" as to A vs. B is as follows:

Received "A" chips - 13
Received "B" chips - 11
No comment on Rev. - 12

Looks like the odds of getting a Rev "A" are better than 50%! I've ordered two of these guys, and got an "A" the first time, and a "B" on the second order. (It's not like the "A" doesn't O/C though..mine topped out at 1.95GHz...)
