XP120 vs Big Typhoon vs Zalman 9500 vs XP90C ?

I am looking for the lowest temps for my X2 3800. I want to get the best OC possible. Right now I have a Zalman 7000AlCu and my temps stink....38 deg idle and 51 load. I would like to get that as low as possible on air. Which heatsink will do that ?

Any others to recommend ?

All of the ones you posted will get you better temps. They are all neck and neck as far as performance. The XP/SI120/XP90C and the Typhoon allows you to choose the fan where the 9500 does not, although a possible fan swap on it is feasible. So, pick the one you like, is most compatible, fits your budget, because they are all so close. g-luck 😉

What dan said....but note--I have the Zalman and I had it installed for over a week.....(now I am testing the XP120) back to the zalman!!
Albeit you can`t specify which fan you can mount the zalman in 4 different directions...thus you do have some flexibility with where the air goes....I had the air exiting upwards toward the PSU ..next time I might have the air heading towards the meory or the rear exhaust fan!!

Hope this helps!!

Hi JediYoda,

Your experiences written on the 9500 you have?

A link to your thoughts?

A Padawan humbly asks.

I have had it since last week... heres some excerpts from my posts concerning the Zalman 9500!!
hey I just installed the zalman 9500!! About 2hrs ago...shes rock steady below 30c for idle...so far she`s been at 27c...for a while now...

With the stock heat sink my idle was temps w/intel approved heatsink...
My systems idles at approx 47c load is 74c

I will leave on tonight and check her when I wake up...
I used AS5 as my thermal compound!!
Since the 9500 is hoooked directly to the mobo the fan is spinning at kazillion revolutions per minute and you can hear it doing so!!
Its not an annoying . it just sounds like a fan on steriods!

In a few minutes I`m going to attach it to my Zalman Multi fan Speed controller and throttle that bad puppy down abit!!!

Also make note...these temps are using AS5.....it has not had time to cure nowhere close to the 100-200hrs!!

Also if I idle the fan down using my Zalman Fan Speed controller my temps rise to only a few degrees centegrade.....right now with the 9500 idled down my temp is 30c.....

When I installed my Zalman 9500 I was all set to use the Zalman bracket......

well low and behold the staock intel heat sink bracket was the exact same bracket for the socket 478 heatsink.....so naturally I was saying to myself...MYSELF..hmmmmmm

Then after looking and relooking and comparing the 2 brackets...I went with the intel stock heatsink bracket.

Install was just a matter of messing with ther alignment of those 2 aluminum bars..it was a cinch!!

Under load my temps were approx 37c to 40c....

I really liked the 9500!!

My Asus Probe also is exactly the same as the Everest!!
I have seen 2 different probes on the same computer and the same CPU give way different temps....which is why I mention that Everest and ASUS Probe are exactly the same temps!!

****************************************************************
As we speak I am testing the XP120!!
My idle fluctuates between 28--30 with the Xp120!!

Big Typhoon is the one that performs best of them from reviews, and is very cheap compared to the 9500.

actually thats just not true....
It all depends on the reviews you read.......
I never worry about price anyways...
I don`t have to ask my parents to buy computer parts for me....thus I really am not cost concious...
I buy my own parts!!!

According to what I have read there are quite a few top notch heatsinks...from ther Scythe Ninja to the big Typhoon to the XP120 and SI120 and XP90 copper and Zalman 9500 as well as other heatsinks...

In fact most of the above heatsinks will place you within 3c to 5c of all of them!!

Ouch! I was thinking I would go for the SI-120 because it is a little less expensive, but with the recommended Panaflo fan that baby is 650+ grams.

The Zalman 9500 is 120 grams less with fan, as far as I can tell, but it looks bigger, and maybe a little harder to fit.

Sigh. Decisions, decisions.

Hey, many of us buy our own parts and are poor 🙁( wife, two kids, house, cars, rising insurance, rising taxes, rising utilities, etc.) and really don't have a lot of spare cash to spend on water.
If you have cash why run air? I would be running water if money were not an issue. You seem to have excellent case airflow however?

I want good air myself and was going to get the Big Typhoon but I wanted to see what the 9500 would do. So far it does not seem as good of a buy compared to the just over $40 Big Typhoon. The Typhoon looked good in every review that I have seen.

The Typhoon does a much better job than the Zalman in this review:
Big Typhoon vs. Zalman CNPS9500 LED
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/4-cool-comp.html

For those that need budget performance the Typhoon like a good buy. Plan to order one this week.....currently running the stock cooler and it is drowning out my Seasonic s12-430!

well to be honest I might go water when I build my AMD rigg...but....

I will tell you that both the Big typhoon andf the Zalman 9500 are excellernt heatsinks....
is one bettrer than the other...nope!
Also XBits labs....since when has that been in the forefront of accurate reviews!
\But with that said...the Zalman 9500 is getting alot of mixed reviews.

Just don`t use a single review to make up your mind....

Have a nice day!!

Typhoon would be the winner if you mounted a faster fan on it. However with the stock 1300rpm fan it would be on par with the other coolers. Btw... it's BIG!

Got the Typhoon last night from CompUsa...for a crazy price. It lowered my temps about 4-5 degees from the Zalman. Waiting for the Arctic Silver to settle.

You are right, I think with a better fan this thing would kill. I just ordered the TT Smartfan that comes with a controller. That way I can regulate better the amount of air the HS will get. I'll report back when I get it.

You did the right thing, the Big Typhoon is the way to go, with it I dropped nearly 10c off load temp with my x2 4400+ @ 2.7ghz over my XP90, when I replaced the stock fan with a 70cfm Panaflo I saw temps decrease an additional 5c at load.

I must say, I'm very impressed by it.

Yes it's expensive and yes it's a Thermaltake product, but it is a good choice for air cooling, the best we have right now.

Well, you sound like the type who should be on water...just do it!

I agree that one is no better than the other....however, the Typhoon with the variable fan looks more atractive for the money.

And I agree with you about the reviews....However, the Big Typhoon has done well in every test that I have seen on the net. Maybe it did not win all comparisons but faired very well with the low speed fan so I know it would be just as good as anything out there with a variable fan.

As far as the Zalman 9500? I was HYPED UP for that thing! I almost pre-ordered. I could easily go ahead and get it but for $75, If I were to shop at SVC for example I could get:
the Typhoon($44.99),
a Smart Case Fan II($14.99)
OCZ RAMsinks($8.99)
Artic Silver 5 ($5.99)

More for my money!

Just bought the Zalman 9500 yesterday. Runs 24C at idle and 44C under load (prime 95 on both cores) at 1350rpm which is clasified as "silent" mode. On thats setting, it really is inaudible. No problems with the base hear, my one was scratch free and perfectly flat.

btw: im using the included thermal paste too. Does anyone know how good the paste that comes with the zalman coolers is? Is it worth getting arctic silver?

Just tellin you what i the sensors are telling me , and since im sitting right in front of the pc, you would THINK i'd know more about what temp my pc is running at then you. Please tell me if you know better 😛 What temperature is my computer running at then?

btw: i dunno what the ambeint temp was, wos like 17C outside but i had the heater on inside anyway. Thats with CNQ enabled, about 26-7 without CNQ.

MixMan -- I hope you didn't order the 80mm "Smart Fan II." The two ThermalTake fans I can tolerate now are the Blue LED 120mm and Blue LED 92mm fans. I believe they both run at 12VDC 0.48Amps. Sometimes the 92 has no motor whine -- other times -- different samples -- it does -- at between 3,200 and full-throttle 3,600 rpm. The 120 has a very slight motor whine at 2,300 to top-end of 2,800 rpm.

I would think for the Typhoon that you should try the Blue LED 120mm, unless ThermalTake makes another model, perhaps with a plain black shroud, which pushes up to 80 CFM.
