XP x64 & E8400

My Vista install seemed to be get progressively worse (this isn't a Vista bashing thread), so I decided to be a minimalist again and go back to XP x64. Everything seems to run smooth, but both E8400 cores show the exclamation point next to them in device manager and are shown as unknown devices. In DxDiag, they show up as PIII Xeons, but it seems to me that was always the case. I'm not sure if this affects anything, but it's annoying to know it's there. I did a custom install and might have stripped out something on accident, but I didn't remove any Intel processor support with nLite. Any ideas? BTW, this is with SP2 slipstreamed.

Do you have the lastest BIOS for your motherboard?
Otherwise I think you should follow PingSpike advice, also check for the Windows Update.

From your statement seems like I will be going back to XP x64 in the near future! Just installed Vista x64, let's see if it gets worse and worse!

I have the lastest BIOS, chipset drivers, and Windows updates. I checked Intel's site, but it doesn't indicate that a driver exists. I still haven't noticed any adverse effects, but I still don't want it there.

I haven't tried XP x64 in a while, but when I did I just had my E8400, and from what I can remember it did recognized my E8400 after I installed the Intel chipset drivers which I downloaded from www.drivers-station.com, here's a direct link: http://www.station-drivers.com...ation-drivers.com).exe

That's version 9.0.0.1011, it is the latest official and WHQL version, and it supports Windows 2000/XP/Vista 32/64bits/2003 server/2008 Server. I don't know if that driver applies to your motherboard, but I'd assume so, since like mine your motherboard has an Intel chipset, right? Then it should do the trick.

If it doesn't work then I don't know what to suggest. Also this driver don't have any un-installer, so you don't have to uninstall anything before installing this, just install and it should automatically overwrite the previously installed version (even if it is the same one).
