XP Won't Startup

I have Windows XP Home Edition on a HP Pavillion PC (Pre-installed) that when I bootup, brings me to a black screen and freezes every time. If it choose any of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Boot, etc., I still come to a locked screen. I'd like to try and run ScanDisk but I am not sure how to, even if I am to make a Boot disk. Is that my only option, and if so, how can I pull it off?

Thanks in advance.

You need to repair the install by using the recovery console. insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted to do so.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
First type chkdsk so it can check your harddrive then type fixboot to repair the boot process and if that doesn't fix your problem go back to the recovery console again and type fixmbr.

Is it at all possible to use the Windows XP Professional disk? HP didn't include a Home CD, they have some recovery process imbedded on the PC's hard drive (one of the dumbest ideas ever). Is that doable?

Thanks.

Try a different monitor. I had a similar problem and a different (Newer) monitor fixed the problem. It seems as if the default video drivers that XP installs is at a fairly high refresh rate for some monitors. While the system would appear "locked" it would actually be running fine. As a quick test just hook up a new monitor to it and I think you will be okay...

If you mean black screen as an out of sync screen or message, then restart into safe mode and set your monitor resolution or refresh lower.
