XP Won't Reconise Keyboard

I recently upgraded my system to XP, and now Windows won't reconise my keyboard or mouse (both using the older PS/2 connecters). I've already upated the drivers, but nothing has changed. Is there something I need to enable or click or install to make them work?

I already know they aren't broken because they work perfectly fine in the setup menu and Bios.

Help would be good.

(I typed this entire thing with a USB mouse from another computer and the onscreen keyboard)🙁

You can try going into DEVICE MANAGER and deleting both
the Mouse and Keyboard from there. Then Power Down completely.
Power up and let WinXP re-detect them. If you get the "Windows
Updating Driver database" you should be ok.

default driver is c:\windows\system32\drivers\i8042prt.sys , you might try replacing the file from a known working system (use recovery console).... also you can try reinstalling SP1, it replaces the default i8042prt.sys with a new one.

How do I reinstall SP1?
