XP won't install

I tried to install XP after I reformatted my harddrive. It tells me I have no harddrive or no power to the H/D. I'm using a Western Digital 20 Gig. Has anyone had this problem?

will it detect it if you boot up with a win98 boot disk? Your hard drive may be pooched, I had it happen to me not too long ago.

Does the WD drive show up correctly in the BIOS? Knowing WD, I'd re-check your jumpers. If it is a single drive, then you should have no jumpers on. If it is master and you are running a slave drive with it, then you need to have a jumper on the middle row.

Install a minimal W98 environment and then launch the XP CD from within it. Chose New Installation (as opposed to Upgrade), copy all files to disk for install, and set installation to let you chose the install location.

For some odd reason, I [less than] occassionally ran into this problem on an older PC, one that I nuke & pave a lot on with various OS's. Make sure the drive is configured as for LBA and not Large/Normal, and you may want to have it Autodetected in the BIOS.
