XP won't install on SATA HD - any ideas?

Hi. Any ideas why the Win XP stop screen error on installation? It says:"A problem has been detected ....STOP: 0X0000007E (0XC0000005, 0XF748E0BF, 0XF78DA208, 0XF78D9F08)pci.sys - Address F748E0BF base at F7487000, Datestamp 3b7d855c". I found info here:Link that indicated slip streaming SP2 into an iso boot disc of Win XP may solve the problem. I'm ashamed to say that I'm having trouble burning the iso. The directions from nLite seem straightforeward. I can't get the iso disc to boot. Out of desparation, I just bought Xp home UPGRADE with SP2 included @ OD. I already had an new, unused legal XP Home upgrade that doesn't have SP2 and it won't fully install either, nor will XP Pro without SP2. Geeze, I can't even get the legal Win98 disc to boot. Question: Is it possible to install Win XP home UPGRADE version that includes SP2 right out of the box on a new HD with no OS? I'm hoping this is a software problem (probably user prob, lol); and not hardware. I'm starting to freak out as I'm running out of time on return policy at Fry's. The system post's and Win98 will actually start to install but quits giving me an error as well. Something like"insuficient memory-quit one or more memory res.? programs or remove unnecessarry utilities from config.sys and autoexec. bat files?? Question: Is it software? Will a FULL version of XP cure the problem? Thanks for any help. (Athlon X2 3800+, K8T890-A, Corsair 2GB twinx2048-3200pt,Seagate 300Gb Sata.)

Trying to find the meaning of your stop message I came across this. It has to do with PCI-x settings. I don't know if your board has a PCI-X slot, but maybe worth a try if it does.

Thanks DBSX. That link looks like a wealth of info, I'll check it out. Yes the ECS K8T890-A mobo has PCI Express slots, in addition to an AGP slot which I'm using. I am a bit confused about the PCI Express slots. The longest one is called PCI Express X16. The other two PCI Express slots are called PCI Express X1 slots. I have no clue what kind of cards go in those. I'm guessing I should have bought a PCI Epress 6800 (from newegg recently for $99 after MIR). Maybe that would have solved my error problem. Ive tried two different AGP cards and the set-up screen seems fine, as far as I can get before the error comes up. The AGP slot on this mobo is called AGPPRO1. I have a PNY GeForce 6600GT 128MB DDR3 in that AGP slot. That card does have the extra 4pin connector to it. I thought that was sufficient until I can get a PCI Express. Thanks for the suggestion.

Stop erros like that can be caused by a hardware failure too. I would check your CPU temps, run a tester on the memory, and make sure you have a power supply unit thats up to the task.

Lvcoyote thanks, I was wondering about hardware. Although the CPU seems to be running fine(fan turns & temp about 42c); I did notice that the New factory box was opened (seal was broken). I asked the sales clerk at Fry's for one that was unopen. When she returned from the cage she stated that they were all like that. I thought B.S. They don't all get opened before sale. In addition, upon further inspection at home, I did notice a trace of thermal paste on the heatsink. Moreover, the outside of the box had a little paper missing, where a label (probably a return merchandise sticker) had been peeled off. Obviously a return. Is there a way to check if CPU is operating properly other than temp? I'm going to do more research. I really hate to have to do a return on hardware, but will if necessary.Next is to verify Video card is compatible with mobo mfgr. I'm just running out of time. Thanks for your input.

Here's my contribution:

1. VIA chipsets + Serial ATA boot drives + Windows = problems for lots of people. I'm still not sure what the magic formula is. But if it were me, I'd stick to a motherboard whose SATA controllers can behave as (for lack of a better term) "generic IDE" and not need any special drivers or routines, such as nForce3 or nForce4 families. Or else use a PATA hard drive.

2. Since you have "fancy" RAM, set the voltage manually to 2.8 volts and see what effect that has.

3. If that motherboard is the kind I think it is, you don't want to be using the pseudo-AGP slot if performance will matter to you. It's not really AGP proper, but a sort of transmuted PCI slot.

If you have the option to return the bundle to Fry's, maybe that would be a good idea. My guess is that the CPU's package was opened so they can record the CPU's serial number and make sure they're getting the same one back if people return it.

Thanks you are the man. Maybe that Fry's hot deal wasn't as hot as I thought. I should probably return the CPU for an exchange if only for principle. However, I really appreciate the info on the AGP slot. I saw your post after I googled the mobo again and I found this thread. It's looking more and more like a VGA incompatibility issue. I had intended to use PCI Express later. I will probably pick up a PCI Exp. card and see if that does the trick. I have until next Sunday for a return merchandise to Fry's. Trying to do a quick build for my son's birthday, this is the first time I did not do extensive research on a build. The Fry's combo was $279.99. What might be a better choice of mobo for an Athlon X2 dual core? Thanks to all.

I was reading up on the Asus A8N-VM CSM because it looked interesting. It's a microATX nVidia-based motherboard that has onboard video with both DVI and VGA outputs, plus a PCI-Express x16 slot to allow upgrading to a decent 3D card later.

Reading a bit more, it sounds from this thread here as if MSI's competing motherboard (the K8NGM2-FID) may be even better in terms of features and overclock options than the Asus. Adjustable memory voltage is something I value, since some RAM these days is not happy with 2.5 or 2.6 volts, and the Asus doesn't have the option to adjust memory voltage, so I would pick some mild-mannered vanilla RAM if I did get the Asus. I see that the MSI does have adjustable memory voltage, another point in its favor.

The onboard GeForce 6150 video won't compete with a 6600GT AGP card, though, so a third idea is the Asrock 939Dual. It features proper AGP, plus PCI-Express, and isn't crazy expensive. I bet Fry's has these in stock.

Thanks for the direction. The MSI K8NGM2-FID looks very interesting. I will have to read a little more about it. I've built 3 or 4 MSI systems and enjoyed all but one. That board taught me not to be an early adopter lol. Thanks for the links. I learned a little more about RAM and timings, fancy vs. non. The sales rep at Fry's suggested the "Patriot "RAM because it had better timings and was the same price as the Corsair. Before I headed to checkout, I found a different rep and asked the difference between the two. She indicated the exact opposite. Stating that the Corsair had better timings. I have Corsair in the past and felt more comfortable with that name brand. I always just thought lower CAS was better/faster. In any case the mobo manual has a suggested list of RAM that included Corsair. I felt a little better not knowing for sure. I have not built a rig in about 2 years so I'm rusty and am going a little slow and steady. mechBgon your site is cool and usefull. That RossMAN the same as on our Hot Deal Forum? I thought someone said no in HD. Anyway, thanks.

Hi, thanks to all. No, not using USB CD rom. Turns out OS would not load due to lack of SP2. My original copy of XP home was unused and was pre-SP2. As soon as I loaded XP home with SP2 included (another new purchase), set-up continued without errors and the OS installed fine. Btw, Office Depot has XP home advertised this week for $99.99 with a $30 MIR. That helped a lot. In addition, MGR. was kind enough to price match Best Buy this week at $89.99. I pressed my luck and after the PM, asked if she would honor a Staples $20 off $100 coupon. She kindly said that they don't honor on-line coupons. (Many times they do). I then asked if I could use my $15 off $100 that Office Depot sent me in the (snail) mail. She hesitated & inspected the coupon that had my name printed on it and said "sure no problem". $25 off at the register plus your $30 MIR. $55 total off $100 software. I'm not sure what coupons are available. Hope that's useful for someone. Thanks to all for all your help. The people here are great.🙂 One last question, how do you indent the message replies to avoid large block paragraphs. I feel retarded but my tab key only moves the reply choices.

If your first set of XP home was retail, you should have just slipstreamed SP2 into it, rather than buy another copy.

TGS< yes you are correct. However, I initially stated:" I'm ashamed to say that I'm having trouble burning the iso" (with the nlite program). I could not get it to boot. The first copy of home is retail, but doesn't have what I needed, SP2. In any case I can always use another OS, as I think it may be time to upgrade some more in the near future. At $45 per OS, I can live with home version.Istill want to learn to use nlite correctly & have a successful disc. Btw, to answer my own question;"will UPGRADE version that includes SP2 right out of the box install on new HD?"--- YES IT WILL! It will install normally and at one point it will ask you to insert a disc that is a previous version of Windows, 98, ME etc.
