XP won't detect camera

I just bought the A60 (thanks deals forum) but when I install it, even though the driver loads in the device manager, no cameras show up under the control panels. Also, when I try to manually add by double clicking "add scanner/camera", nothing happens--the wizard won't start. Is there some way to fix this issue without reinstalling windows?

In order for the camera to be detected, it has to be ON. Try this - you have the software installed. So, connect the USB cable to the camera but not the computer. When everything is up and running, hot plug the camera USB cable other end into the computer. That should produce a hit.

I have been using digital cameras for about 8 years now, and am on my 5th and best. I have NEVER installed camera software or connected the camera to the computer. I use media reader/writers instead. It is faster, neater, and doesn't tie up the camera or waste battery power.

Yeah, a media writer is next on my list. Along with a card bigger than 16mb. But I wanted to play with it before, because like any present, I need to play with it immediately.

Regarding the troubleshooting, I already hotplugged it in. The computer does sort of detect it. Like I said, it says "hardware installed and ready to use" and the driver shows up under device manager, but the XP doesn't see a camera as one of the drives on the computer. Neither does the Canon software. I tried it on my father's computer (same OS) and it works just fine. I'd just like it to work on my computer too.

If you get the new hardware detected pop-up you should see it under My Computer then. All my digital cameras show up like that. Even my Olympus C-740 I didn't have to install any software or drivers for.

Yes I know it should show up. I'm posting this because it isn't showing up. It has something to do with my OS install and I was wondering if it is reperable or I need to reinstall :(

Do you have this problem with any other USB devices? Have you tried different USB ports? Did you install the USB 2.0 drivers for XP?

-no, my scanner works with photoshop (it's usb)
-yes, I've tried different usb ports (and checked them all with devices that work)
-yes, i've installed the 2.0 drivers for XP (I assume because the other devices work, including the 2.0 devices I have)

I really think it has something to do with my control panel scanners/cameras "add a device" function not loading, cuz that's the only difference between the working computer and the non-working computer.

Thanks for the help so far though! I appreciate your patience.

Hmmm make sure the WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) service is started. Other than that I am stumped without being there to look at the machine.

What is the WIA?

I downloaded a driver called WIA i think but it crashed when I would try to update it, so I just installed it through device manager. Now it says "canon camera" under unknown devices along with my scanner--except the scanner works.

WIA is included as part of WinXP. It's a service that allows Windows to easily setup digital cameras and scanners. To check if it's running:

Right click My Computer and choose manage. Expand Services and Applications. Click on Services. Scroll to the bottom of the list and look for WIA. Make sure it's running and that it's not disabled. It should be set to start automatically.
