XP won't allow a re-install

I have been having problems with my system ever since I upgraded my machine with a new video card, an ATI AIW X800XT.

The card does not work in the Multi media mode, after the desktop loads, it says there are missing files.

I decided to reformat my drive and do a clean install of XP.

An error message comes up after I boot with my XP CD and I request to do an install.

Basically, it says the files on the XP CD are older than the files I have on my machine and it won't let me format the drive and start over.

Any suggestions?

My CD came with SP1, my system is Asus P4p800 SE motherboard, Northwood 3.2 processor and I have 1 gig ram.

PS
I did reformat my new hard drive a year ago when I purchased the AIW X800XT video card. I am using the same XP CD

Are you booting the CD from within Windows?

That would be the only time I can think of where you'd be told the CD files are older.

If you booted the machine from the XP cd instead of going into Windows, you'd then get the an option to format the drive during setup.

I'm doing a cold boot directly to cd.

Is the only way to format the drive thru DOS?

Does this look correct?

Format /FS: NTFS

The reason you get that error message is because your computer is likely
up to date with all windows updates and the cd you are using is XP either
with NO Service Pack or only with SP1 on it ... You need to use an XP CD
that has been slipstreamed with SP2 already ... There is a utility called
Autostreamer that can make the cd for you .. not hard, but you will need the
SP2 files and your xp cd to do it

You can get it here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/T...eak/Autostreamer.shtml

It is free

I'll give it a try, but I know the last time I format the drive it had SP2 on the system.

I believe it has something to do with the registry being screwed up.

I'm confused. If you reformat the drive, how can there be any files on it to be newer? Don't use the XP CD to reformat the drive. Use a 3rd party bootable such as PartitionMagic 8, Ultimate Boot CD, or Acronis Drive Cleaner . . . anything like that. Then do your install on a clean drive or at least clean partition.

I can't use the XP CD do correct the problem because as soon as it starts to perform the install it gives me the message that the files on the PC are newer than the files on the XP CD.

I agree if I could remove the partition I could start over and do a fresh install.

I am trying to accomplish that using DOS or the install CD unless someone knows of a free software that can accomplish the task.

I have Dial Up so I'm hoping to find a program that has a fairly small file, my ISP has an auto close feature after 4 or 5 hours.
