XP Windows Update Driver

Here's a bump for you. I am interested also. Just installed xp for the first time today and noticed it.

Windows Update compared the PnP ID's of hardware in your machine against a database of available updates. If there's an update available for your hardware, WU will present you with those updates.

So, if WU doesn't show you any updates, there are none that are applicable to your hardware.

I sort of follow you but what hardware is it updating?

There should be a Knowledge Base article pertaining to this update/driver. Have you read it?
You know, I really don't have time to read everything in their database that pertains to XP. That's why we have these public forums to ask questions that others may know the answer to.

There is always a possibility of an update/new driver hosing your system. I think the argument is that Windows updates are WHQL approved. This means they have been tested. This is not a 100% guarantee against "hosing", but it's a better guarantee than what you are going to get elsewhere.


MS did make the OS after all....they know a thing or two about what works best with it.
