XP Updates Fail...

Title says it all. Computer is AMD Athlon 1700XP+ w/ 512 MB of Ram running Windows XP Pro. Windows Alert (or whatever the shield icon is that they use these days) say that updates are available and are waiting to be installed. However, when I try to install them, it just says "update failed" without an explanation. Any suggestions? These are the failed installations (and yes, I've rebooted a number of times):

Security Update for Windows XP (KB912919)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB905915)
Update for Windows XP (KB910437)

Interestingly, Windows Genuine Advantage authentication wasn't installed on the computer prior to this--and the automatic update didn't seem to catch it, had to go to windowsupdate.com to get it approved.

Also, for whatever it's worth, .Net 2.0 and the VB 2005 Express Edition won't install (specifically, it hangs on the .Net portion of the installation)

Edit: Of note there, the error log for the .Net install process mentions a registry key being unable to be written. The user account is an Administrator on the computer. Any chance that the registry could be corrupted somehow? Any way to check?

No answer, but a question. Was Visual Studio Beta installed on that set? An autoinstall may fail as the production code wants the beta components removed.
