XP: turn off thumbnails in save-file dialog box

Every time I try to open or save a file to a folder with pictures in it I get the huge thumbnails instead of the list. I don't get this if I view the folder in Explorer and even if I change it to list, next time around it will have the thumbnails again. They're so slow and big, it makes finding anything a pain. Is there a way to get rid of this permanently?
