runs Microsoft Corp.'s Office suite 10% faster than XP SP2, a performance testing software developer reported Friday.
Hopefully it is faster in more things than just that! But, I thought that SP3 for XP was just a collection of existing updates?

that's what i understood...i am in the beta tester program so i could have gotten SP3 but i understood that it was simply a collection of existing updates for ppl who don't have a genuine serial and so weren't able to receive some of the updates.

maybe i'm wrong? i'll see. maybe it's worth trying out after all?

I've been running sp3 throughout the various betas.
Currently using RC1.
It contains all the fixes from windows update, plus fixes that are not out of testing.
It also adds some things from vista.

I have not noticed a speed improvement, but I also have not noticed any problems running the betas. So for me its not fixed anything, but its not broken anything either :)

Looks like XP with SP3 will make leaving Vista even more enticing.

According to Cnet XP with SP3 is also over 2 times faster in some benchmarks than Vista.

I just installed XP64 last night and couldn't beleive how much faster it was. I hope Vista gets some more improvement

I just wish they would backport UAC into XP and make limited users the default. Number 1, it will dramatically cut down on the spread of malware, which is a bonus for us users. And 2, some idiots actually think that is a bad thing in Vista so pushing it into XP will encourage people get used to it sooner - therefore eliminating one reason for why some people like XP over Vista (of course this is probably somewhat balanced by the people who realize UAC is probably the greatest security feature that has been sorely lacking in Windows operating systems).

Im sure you could find some crazy benchmark, or have so little ram, that it does so poorly in Vista itll make XP seem like its twice as fast, but in reality, thats just good ol fashioned BS.

If there is something twice as fast in XP as in Vista, its a bug.

The nature of the 'performance boost' is being misrepresented. An example of the improvements made in SP3 are:

In addition, SP3 improves black hole router detection (sensing of routers dropping certain kinds of packets), allowing XP to reconfigure the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to keep connections alive without the performance compromise the detection formerly caused. SP3 turns on detection by default; in earlier versions of XP, the facility was both less capable and, to minimize processor load, turned off by default.
This is just one specific example, I'm sure there are numerous others.

If certain components contained bugs or flaws that impacted efficiency and processor overhead, it would follow that fixing those bugs or flaws might then have an impact on efficiency and processor overhead.

I'm assuming SP3 has Windows Genuine Advantage built right in and that's the first thing that happens on reboot, right?

<--very suspicious of MS and any patches

My system is spyware-free and that includes Microsoft's...I mean, let's call WGA what it really is. Spyware.

That said, I've been looking forward to SP3. SP2 is rock-stable but there are so many security updates and such since it's release that it takes forever to get a system "current" after a reload.

The reports of XP being twice as fast as Vista are based from a specific Office Script, run on a virtual PC doing tasks that do not represent any real world activiities. At least not at any speeds a human would even come close too. It's is in this and only this specific script (Officebench) that this appears. Don't buy this story until you see actual benchmarks including other functions like Rendering, encoding and gaming on Operating System installed as the primary OS and not in a virtual machine.

Benchmarks != Real World.

And trusting CNet for anything is a bad idea.

Vista blows the pants off XP or 2K across the board. I know.

Some testers claim it is 10% faster

Devil Mountain Software must not have gotten the note last week from MS reminding them that the NDA was a NDA. ;)

IIRC hasn't OfficeBench always been a joke? I think this statement has even been made by the reviewers of AT.

Benchmarks are misleading since I have seen all sorts of figures, they can't all be right?..Some beta testers say no difference in their XP performance while others say slight improvement, all I know is that SP3 will have some minor Vista features included and be the last service pack for XP from Microsoft.
