Hello

I have a Dell Precision T5400 with lots of good specs (Windows XP-SP3). Recently I have started having a strange problem which is causing me some consternation. ($$##@$#@$!)

I don't think there were any major changes to the system before this started happening. I did install one new trading application, but that isn't even open when this happens and I can't be 100% it started at the same time as that install.

If I have a very few applications open, i.e. firefox and excel or i-tunes and bloomerg or excel and explorer, sometimes when I try to perform a new task (i.e. open a webpage, or open a file on my computer, or even open explorer) the computer beeps and fails to perform the new task.

If I close some of the applications (and again we are talking about only a very few things open), then I can do the new task I want to do.

I put memory problem in the subject, although I have no problem what the real cause is. It appears that the system doesn't have enough resources for hte new task. I can't believe this is a hardware resource problem, I have computers which much worse hardware specs where I can run 10+ applications at a time no problem.

Does this sound like virus activity? or that Data Execution Prevention stuff?

I have looked at the performance items on the Windows Task Manager and there seem to be plenty of unused resources.

Any suggestions at all would be appreciated. This is driving me crazy!

Sounds like you might be running too many processes in the background i.e. quick launch apps, RSS, diagnostics, utilities. etc..

You may be running out of memory but doubt it. Seams more like a limited area of virtual memory. Are your HDDs pretty full?

You mention getting a beep from the system. Is that coming from the tower or the speakers?
