XP shutdown woes

I just reinstalled xp, and I installed an unsigned driver- as a result of this I can no longer shutdown my computer and have it turn itself off. It gives the prettied up "You may now shut off your computer" sign. I have searched everywhere, here, ars, google, ms, altavista and have not found a solution that works. People say its related to APM, well apm isn't even installed on this machine for some reason nor could I find instructions on how to manually install it. I'm at whits-end here. My system specs are as follows

AMD Morgan 1600xp
Epox 8kha+ Mobo
256 Crucial DDR Ram (2100)
ATI RADEON 32MEG DDR
L&C 425Watt PS
ALPHA8045 HEATSINK/FAN
Realtek 8039 NIC
Windows XP Professional

I'm willing to try anything here, so don't be embarassed to share your ideas.
thanks
Nathan

I, and many others, have encounter similuar shutdown problem

Microsoft has identified the Problem and the Fix for it, but they won't release it till ServicePack1

You can find the problem "number" identified by microsoft by:

1. go to microsoft.com
2. search the support's Knowledge Base
3. type in windowXP as your Os
4. Type in the word "Hang"
5. About 5-8 problems listed is the 'Hang @ shutdown' error

Microsoft has verified there was a problem, but you can't get the patch till SP1

similar problem here, but it eventually shuts down. takes about 15-20 seconds every time though. I installed the new nvidia drivers that were supposed to fix the problem but it didn't do anything, and I turned off the nvidia checking option somewhere too, that didn't do anything either...any ideas for me?

you can not find APM tab from power options under control panel?
It should be there by standard--it just a matter on enable it or disable it..--sometimes It was disabled by default--so you have to enable it.

On my rig its not even there, I think its because I had ACPI disabled in the bios when I installed xp. Is there a way to install it after you have installed xp?

I have discovered through searching the web that Nvidia drivers can cause a delayed shutdown issue under XP. I have cured the problem on my system. It is caused by the nvidia help service. Locate this service and disable it. My shutdown now takes about 10 secs as opposed to 30 secs.
