Hey guys, need some serious help.

Trying to install Windows XP Pro onto my computer. And during the winxp setup, it stops responding when it says 35 minutes left to install. I've restarted probably 20 times and it hangs up in the SAME EXACT place. Starting to REALLY piss me off.

Here's what I've tried so far:

1.) Removed all PCI cards from mobo.
2.) Switched hardrives, reformatting before each windows install.
3.) Tried 2 different copies of Winxp pro
4.) In BIOS, switched ACPI on/off, disabled all I/O's.
5.) Searched through Microsoft and found this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;828267

but that hasn't really helped. I've gone through and did most of what that article has talked about, but the problem keeps happening.

My computer wouldn't boot up which is why I'm trying this clean install. I know it can't be the hardrives because I reformat every single time and both of them are brand new.

This is beyond me, I built my computer 2 years ago, and this is the first time it's had a hiccup this bad. specs: p4 1.6ghz OC'd to 2.45ghz, 1gig pc2700 ram, gf4-4200, WD 80 gig + WD 120 gig, Lite-on 40x CDR/W.

I really appreciate ANY kind of help, thanks.

*UPDATE, have tried swapping out RAM in all configurations and same thing still happens!

**UPDATE: Have set CPU voltage + clock speed back to stock. Same problem.

***UPDATE: Have successfully installed win98 on the computer. Does this prove that it is my copy of XP that is causing all this?

****UPDATE: Successfully fixed my computer! It was the ethernet card on my mobo.

First, leave acpi on. Second, just because the hard drives are new, doesnt mean they are not bad. Run the full diagnostic from the drive maker. Did you try it witout any overclocking? Did you try it with only one stick of ram at a time? If you are using RAID, did you try it without raid?

I've tried leaving ACPI on, and one hardrive I'm trying actually had winxp installed and working perfectly up until my computer wouldn't boot. Like I said, I've tried two separate hardrives (both of which I believe are in perfect working order) and w/ both of them, xp hangs at the exact same place, I'm pretty sure it's not because of a bad sector. I've tried at the default CPU speed 1.6ghz, to no avail. I don't have a RAID setup, but I will try swapping out the RAM, that's something I haven't thought of...

but it's obviously a hardware problem right?

Where did you get these copies of XP?

Yeah, 1.6 @ 2.45 stock cooling too, running under 40C under full load, I've got a coolermaster and I think it keeps things pretty cool and stable.

These are 2 separate burned copies of winxp, but I don't get a copy file error during the installation process.

Just going to throw something out there....

So how about the power management on your mobo? Maybe at the 35 min marker Windows is trying to reboot and hanging because the command to cycle power is getting stuck.

I don't know.. hope this leads to better ends for ya.

Yeah, I actually thought of that too, and disabled power management in the BIOS. But thanks for the suggestion.

I'm going to try swapping out the RAM tonight and see what happens.

It's just so damned frustrating because it's a bare bones system right now, so I think it has to be related to the mobo. Either one of my ram sticks is fried or some section of my mobo is dead...

i have had this prob on a few installs of xp on various machines. how long did you leave it going? i gave up a few times and even called MS. one time i just let it go and it ultimately "pushed" through. it took 10x as long as it should have but it got past the hang and ultimately loaded. ive since reinstalled a few other times with this disc and only 1 in 10 or so did i have this hang prob, just wait it out if you havent tried that.

no, i haven't tried that. I just thought that a clean install would be better than repairing it.

and update, i've tried swapping out my ram sticks but no configuration is getting me anywhere.

i have let it go for a while, hoping that when i came back to it, it would work, but the couple times that I did, nothing happened. nothing was writing to the hardrive and the GUI was stuck in the same place. Just how long did you let it go for?

i got these copies from friends, and no doubt they go iso's from the net. If the ISO was bad, then wouldn't i get some kind of file copy error or something? If not then, what are the chances that two CD's have the exact same error in the exact same place?

Yep, what this man said. Change back all of your clock speeds in your BIOS to the defaults, and try again. I had this issue, and it drove me nuts, as I did try replacing every piece of hardware on there.

OK, i set the clock speed and vcore voltage back to stock, 1.5v, and 1.6ghz, and it is still not responding. I restarted like 4 times and it continues to hang in the same place.

Holy crap i think i'm going to lose it soon...
WTF is going ON???????

Could you try a different CD-drive?
Maybe it's powering down and not spinning back up when it needs to.

I'd say it was heat, but it would be at different times as the installations progressed.

Also makes me think the .iso that was used to burn the CD's had a corrupt spot in it.
YMMV

Try installing with your case open and good air flowing. Have you been able to successfully install from this particular disc before?

I've only tried my dvd drive once before (instead of my cdr/w), but that was with only one CD, I'll try and use the other CD this time with my dvd drive.

my case is open and all fans are going, and CPU read temps look OK, I set the clock back to stock so i don't think it's the heat. My harddrives are getting plenty of air flow too.

I used to be able to install xp using one of the CD's just fine. I remember I reformatted 2 or 3 times before without a problem.

I'm beginning to think that the initial non-booting nature of my computer that prompted me to clean install may have some clues as to what's going on...

Yeah, I'm going to try my dvd drive tonight. it's such a pain waiting to go home from work to fix this thing. I should probably just take a day off and nurse my comp back to health.

Could it be my geforce 4 ti4200? I haven't tried swapping that out to see what would happen. I actually had that thing overclocked as well, but that was only a software OC if I remember correctly...

Do you have any extra IDE cables? I had a bad IDE cable (I think) and put one of the original cables in....I was having a similar problem...

Try swapping cables, with just one hard drive and cd drive.

EDIT:

Could be a bad copy of XP though...seems kind of likely with the freezing in same place....of course you're computer not booting is a problem too.

Do you have a good powersupply?
