I have a probably easy question but anyways i just installed xp pro on anouther computer recently and left it siting there runing without any programs etc installed on it and was using the default xp pro screensaver it has. Whenever the screen saver comes on hard drive activity seems to be very active and the led is flashing like crasy. I have noticed this on any xp pro system runing the xp screen saver. Does anyone know what its doing in the background while the screen saver is runing?

Indexing?

XP indexes files when the computer is idle. When the install is new, it has a lot of work to do to get up to speed.

It also may be organizing the files on your drives to allow for faster bootup.

Perhaps I missed the joke, but it is, in fact, well known that XP is just about the fastest booting Microsoft OS outside of MS-DOS.

Most definatly. Nothing like booting a powerful OS like XP on a PII400 in less then 20 seconds.

I don't thing it does boot optomization defrag just randomly though. The indexing service is a more likely answer in this case.
