XP req'd disk space?

Hello. I recently installed WinXP Pro on my 5 gig OS partition. I previously had Win98SE installed, which occupied about 1.4 gigs all told of the 5 gig partition, along with various system utils like Nero, Office 97, Tweaking utils, etc...That is, I had over 3 gigs of free space.

Then I installed XP over Win98. Upon my first use of XP, I RAN OUT of disk space on my 5 gig partition! I found XP had placed a 768 meg paging file on C: and saved my old OS installation so I could uninstall XP if I wanted. I moved the page file to E: (30 gigs of free space), and removed the uninstall file. I was then left with around 900 megs free space on my C drive (about 4.1 gigs used).

I was under the belief that XP required 1.5-ish gigs for a complete install. Can someone confirm this? I mean, going from 1.4 gigs of used space with win98 and all my system utils on C: to 4.1-ish gigs of used space after all I did was install WinXP Pro is rediculous!

Also, could someone point me towards some info regarding changing out motherboards with XP installed without re-installing? (If thats possible). I'm going to replace my old KT333 with an nforce2 (NF7-S 2.0 probably) in a week or 2.

Thanks,
PD

P.S. Just a thought, could my free space on C disappearing act be a result of doing the "Upgrade" installation over Win98 instead of a fresh install of XP on a clean/formatted drive? I do have the full version (not upgrade).

i'm pretty sure that you are missing so much hd space because you did a upgrade...

when i do a fresh install of xp, it'll only take about 2gb minimum with all my programs installed... that's a very bare minimum...

i personally have my xp drive at about 3gb and that's usually fine for me.. i don't have anything else installed on that partition except for the os.. haven't had any problems yet.. however, lots of other users like to have around 5gb of space just in case.

my suggestion to you would be to do a fresh install of xp.. you'll find that there will be more free space

Thanks for the replys, I sorta figured I shouldn't have done an upgrade. I used to always do a fresh install every few months. I guess its long overdue anyhow.
