XP remote connection using too much bandwidth??

I have two networked WinXP boxes using the Linksys broadband router / switch, and I run a Shoutcast music server from one of them. I used to use a KVM switch for access to both, but decided to switch to using a WinXP remote connection to administer remotely. Previously, I had no problems streaming at an adequate bandwidth either externally or across my LAN.

Now, logging on to the Shoutcast server machine via remote connection and disconnecting, I seem to be having serious bandwidth issues (even internally). Does remote connection use up bandwidth even when the session is "disconnected?" (ie leaving the user logged on?).
