Can I reinstall XP over XP or do I have to format first. I need to fix something funky with XP and think a reinstall may do it. Whenever I download something in IE the download screen pops up and it has the last letter in *.jpg, *.avi, *.asf, etc different such as *.jpe, *.avp, *.asx, etc.

You should be able to install XP over itself. I have done that with Win95 and Win98 successfully but so far my XP is running perfectly.

Sounds like you lost some associations with the file types you listed. Or could be you have a corrupted associations file.

You cannot install XP over an existing installation like 98 and ME. XP will delete the previous install first, so you will lose all settings and anything in the Windows folder.

I did not know that because I have had no occasion to reinstall XP. I guess there is a lot different in XP I will have to learn about. Thanks for that information.

Yes you can.

I forgot how but this is covered on the MS knowledge base.

Did you know you can uninstall and re-install IE6 on XP too? Yup you can. Always check the MS knowledge base first.
