Not sure if this is a repost, if it is, I apologize. But for those of us who have received our RC1 cds of XP, what do you think? I hate it. I've been using beta 2 for a few weeks now, w/o any problems. I liked it ok, but really struggled with alot of the stupid kiddie look and how difficult it was to find and control the advanced functions, even after turning off the XP part (making it basically like Win2k). But as I excitedly popped in my RC1 cd I was disapointed almost immediately. When the OS finished installing, I was confronted with that whole ridicuously dumbed down wizard for "setting up your computer." Things after that just started to become even more annoying, with things I felt I could "get over" or "deal with" in beta 2, I just couldnt take. So I said screw it and put 2k back on. I was hoping the OS would become more realistic towards the RCs, but instead has become even more stupid. Ok, end of my rant, what do y'all think of XP RC1?

I'm not sure I understand. If you quit the stupid setup your computer wizard, then it is over. What else do you find annoying? I have installed every Microsoft operating system they have created so far, and I'm not sure what you see stupid about RC1? You don't like the new digital camera wizard? When I plug in my Sony DSCF505 into the USB cable, it pops open the wizard to copy or move my picture onto the hard drive. With 2k and ME and 98 I had to go into the explorer and navigate to the removable drive and manually copy them to a new directory. Is that annoying in RC1? When I installed and didn't have to supply any driver disks, unlike 2k or ME or 98, is that annoying? When I can setup a home LAN between 2 different operating systems, one of them being RC1, without having to jump through hoops rebooting 5 times like ME or 98, is that annoying and stupid? Is the Cleartype effect that smooths my fonts on my 18 inch LCD screen, which I don't see in 2k, ME or 98, annoying? How about the built in CD writing? The built in unzipper?

I must be lost... Help me out!

Hehe, I hear you man. People will b!tch about the smallest things:( Windows XP is a crossover product (Win9x - Win2k), hence all the wizards and stuff. The opening Wizard only has to be done once and it's not like it's gonna KILL you. And rest of the wizards like the scanning, camera, etc. are AWESOME. Saves time, and they work great. I also happen to like the new UI. If you don't like it, turn it off. Or better yet, stick with Win2k if you're gonna complain.

No no, u get me wrong. I guess my post was pretty incomplete. :) I love alot of the stuff XP has (especially clear type, so so sweet!!!!), but the general feel, looks, and the way you move around is annoying as heck to me. Like in Win2k, once you enable the "administrative tools" in the start menu (with about 5 or 6 clicks at most) getting to computer management is super easy, where all the good stuff happens (advanced user and disk management). But in XP it takes forever to either enable it in the start menu or try to manuever around the control panel to find computer management. Now, you may say, most of this can be disabled, resembling the basic Windows look. But alot of the dorky crap is still there, like the hideous 1st grade drawn icons in IE or the for-losers-only wizard on first boot up. It may sound like I'm whining, but these are just my thoughs on the release and wanted to hear some others.

Just to reiterate.....I like ALOT of the stuff XP has, probably most really. It's just the crap I've already talked about that bugs me. :)

I kinda like RC1, but I think Beta 2 was better in some places.

Overall, I don't think upgrading from Win2K to WinXP is worth it. I've had a lot of problems with XP and MS's official reply to most of them is "This issue will not be addressed" or something like that. I'm not going to buy a new 3D card and stop using my drive imaging app just to get a fancy new UI and a mutt from the kennels of hell that "helps" me when I want to search for files.

Consider me a screwball, but I sort of like it.;) On the UI front, while some things are a bit "out there", like the IE icons, and the default system for showing the "Programs" folder; the rest is rather nice, it brings in a needed change that 6 years of Win95 have dulled. At the same time, it's living up to its "merger" plan, as I'm finding it much more easier to control than Win2K(and yes, the wizard is one of those benefits), but more powerful than Win98(other than the fact that I can't turn off the damn auto-insert notification). Other than that, my complaints mostly lie with games, which still run a tad slower than on Win98. I'm finding the stability a hoot to say the least(I'm comming from Win98 may I remind you). Personally, I'm looking for Win2k's power without the Ph.D requirement; what are you looking for?

PS Anyone else with SB Live! cards finding that the "quiting" sound when XP shuts down, is set to max, even though it should follow the normal sound settings?
