XP random reboots - I can't figure it out.

Started a few weeks ago, slowly at first, then with more frequency.

the only pattern I can see is it always reboots during Spybot scan. I can't even run an XP reinstall - it reboots immediatley after I reach the menu screen. Sometimes when trying
to reinstall, I get a blue screen, which reports a problem with setupdd.sys.

Nothing suspicious in hijackthis.
Memory passed memtest86.
I flashed the bios to the most current.
I reinstalled the Nforce2 drivers from Nvidia.
Cutting FSB to stock speed did nothing.
Temperatures are fine (rebooted at 39C processor once)
DiskCheck turned up nothing.

Here's my setup: Athlon XP2500 OC to 3200, Asus A7N8X Deluve Rev. 2, 2x512 PC3200,
Radeon 9600, Win XP Professional SP2 with all patches.

The only software added recently was IE7 beta2 (removing it didn't help), Windows Genuine Advantage (this can't be removed, apparently).

Can anyone save me from format/install? Any help is appreciated.

I tried resetting the CPU back to 2500. Both by lowering the multiplier and by lowering
the FSB. No dice.

What's really throwing me is the bluescreen during XP reinstall. I mean, Windows isn't even loading fully then, is it?

I believe I tried running Spybot in safe mode. I've tried so much, I can't remember.
I'll try that just to be sure tonight after work. Thanks.

Restart

I think this came up and was installed in Windows Update, which I check at least once a
week. At any rate, thanks. I applied it again right now. Will let you know if the issue is
resolved.

Hi all.

I tried running Spybot in Safe Mode with Networking - BSOD with no info.

Rebooted into Safe Mode without Networking - BSOD, said the problem seemed to be ntfs.sys, and stated PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA (I think. I should have written
it down)

Other symptoms I forgot to mention before - I keep installing macromedia flash, but on next reboot has to be reinstalled (though it's still in the add/remove control panel).
Same with JAVA. Install it, and it works fine until next boot.

I've got another HD laying around that I formatted last night. I'll install the OS tonight or
tomorrow, then I'll copy over the docs I want to keep. Hopefully that'll fix the issue.

Thanks.

Download and run the Prime95 program. It's a free program to use. Open it and select the 'torture test' and let it run for a while. If it gives you a hardware error message or causes your system to reboot, then you've got hardware failure somewhere, which is most likely ram failing or possible overheating.
