XP Quirks

I'ved had one outstanding problem with XP that occurred out of the blue without explanation and I'd like to know if anyone else has had anything similar....

I installed XP fresh on my PC back in March....sometime in June without explanation, the search stopped working. What do I mean? Well when I clicked on search nothing would happen - I'd look into 'tasks' and 'Explorer' would be using about 80% of my processing power. Ofcourse, I tried just about everything - I turned indexing off, I disabled lots of startup software and more, to no avail. Eventually one day I just left it to see if it would pop up after hours or so but nada. It's a baffling problem that I'd really like to get some insight on or answers to. How'd I fix it? I simply created another user and copied all my user settings/files over to it. Works to this day.

Any comments on what that could be? I'd hate having to do that every time (just in case it happens again)

I've updated my XP Pro fully. I have a K62 500 w/ 512 and 60 gb (Don't Laugh!) I'm upgrading to 2200 currently.

More Quirks:

My friend has an XP machine also...and though this doesn't bother him whatsoever, it bothers me.
One day he lost his "XP Interface". All he has is 'classic windows'. He doesn't care since for now it's purely cosmetic - but if that happens to me I'll burst (maybe I'll reinstall before that happens 🙂. ) In any case, I'm not that much of a newbie, I know it's selectable in the Display Settings....thing is, it's not for him - all he has there is classic windows. There's no 'xp style' option at all.

Ok well...Thank Goodness those are the only 'wierd' things that Xps ever introduced to me....

Comments? Suggestions? Etc....

Thanks.

Your searching problem sounds like something in your profile got corrupted. (WinXP keeps loads of personal settings in C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\ this is referred to as your user profile.) Creating a new user made a fresh profile and so the old corrupted one stopped being a problem. You could probably fix it by deleting the directory "C:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings" although this would lose a few other personal preferences as well.

As far as your friends problem goes, was he trying to use a third party program such as StyleXP to use other themes? That particular problem tends to happen when something non-microsoft interferes with the data files for the theme and damages them.

Heya,

Thankz for that post. Well I figured it'd be something like that - I was wondering if there would have been anything I could do to not make it worse....that is to say, I'm assuming deleting that directory would possibly do more damage.
That's pretty annoying though eh? I mean...I like XP and I think it's pretty 'solid' from what I've seen. No 'crashes' have ever haulted my system or forced me to do any hard reboots, not even that one - but it does cause an annoyance. Sucks to think there's no real 'fixitupper' way to take care of it. Thanks anyway....

And about my friend - well not really. He's not much of a tinkerer like I am. I was usually his guinea pig; unfortunate that his pc was the one that always crashed. 😀
Nah he said that one day the PC started without it and it never came back again. He never even knew where to look for the setting so, you know he didn't do it.
As I said when I looked for it the only setting there is Windows Classic Style. The worst part is that his screen isn't even full 'classic' style. It has the XP Start Menu and Programs but not the XP Start Button or Blue/Silver/Green Color. Also, no programs have that matching xp border or menu options (min, max, close). It's like an odd hybrid mix of both.

Ah well....if he doesn't care, I guess I don't.

Thanks again for the response.

Probably the best way of fixing the style problem it to do a re-install. If you choose upgrade rather than fresh install, windows keeps everything and just re-copies the system files. This would probably fix the problem and allow you to keep all your data and settings.
