i set up a in home network between a XP machine and a 98se machine. The 98se connects to the internet. The XP uses internet sharing to reach the net. Every time a log into the XP machine it dials my modem on the 98se machine to connect to the internet. How do I stop this problem?

Are you trying to get XP to run through a DSL or LAN setup?? If so, then you need to change how IE connects to the internet. Right click on IE on the desktop and go to Properties and then Connection tab and tell it how to connect to the internet. Or is this a general connection to the internet (ie AIM, ICQ, etc). If so, then you need to configure something in your Network Properties box for your network card. OR you could take the modem out alltogether and see what XP does. Good Luck!!

I have a small business client that connects to the internet via dial-up w/Proxy server 2.0 on Windows 2000 Server. When a client w/Win2000 goes into Internet Explorer the server hangs up and redials the connection! Can't figure out what the hell is causing this. Any ideas?

XP causes it to dial as XP wants to go online to check for auto updates and activate any conections that may be set up. Try dissabaling any start up programs that may dial up as well as XP auto update.

You can select "never dial" in the IE connection setup. Also, as far as checking programs that will automatically trigger and dial-up in the win98se machine, you can disable windows time service (XP is trying to correct the PC time), turn off auto update, turn off auto update in your virus protection software, or any other software that is setup for auto update by default (i.e., windows media player). In addition, by default, MS messenger will start automatically at startup and try to connect to the net which will trigger the dial up in the win98se machine.
