"Boot Failure insert system disk and press enter"

I tried system restore with no improvement. Everything was fine on a recent reformat of my first modern SATA HD, 3 weeks of bliss, now this error.

I'm inexperienced, and a Microsoft database search didn't yield this error to me. Is anyone familiar with what I might try to fix it?

I can hit enter, but this is unfamiliar problem with the hang on booting is making me very unhappy.

I tried to reinstall windows on top of itself, but I got a "system kernel change prevents install" notice that prevented it. I was in windows ans just tried installing from the CD while booted.)

Have you checked the BIOS? What is your boot order? I would try making the HD the first boot device. Let me know if that does not work and I will give you some other things to check.

You wouldn't happen to have a floppy in the drive, would you? Sounds like it was trying to boot from that.
