I think my wife may have gotten a virus on her computer and NORTON MISSED IT.

The thing boots but there is no desktop. I can do a CTRL ALT DELETE and see that EXPLORER.EXE is NOT RUNNING. I try to run it, and it will not do so. All the other services are running but not explorer.

Done check disk, scan disk, safe mode is same thing, last known configuration also..same thing.

I leave it, it goes into standby, move the mouse and the login in welcome window is back, but when i select the user, NO DESKTOP.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?

APPRECIATE NOT HAVING TO DO A FRESH INSTALLATION?

THANKS A BUNCH

login under the admin account and try deleting her profile, I wouldnt be surprised if that takes care of it.

this is why my girlfriend (soon to become my wife) doesnt have admin rights, worse thing she can do is mess up her profile to which I just rename/restore her important files and the "issues" are gone..

some problems are less work to avoid than to fix.

out of curiosity have you tried killing tasks to see if something else is interfering with explorer's ability to load? I would like to assume that wouldnt matter under safe mode but sometimes you just cant be to sure.

Other than that I think she done killed windows ;)

why not just go to recovery consule and just delete explorer.exe and replace it with a new one?

when u boot up can you get to the regestry? If so have you checked out these keys HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

as they should be, what he means is that those things load at startup and to remove unnecisary stuff.

Map C$ as a network drive and scan that

EDIT: NM I see what you're asking, hook it up to another box and scan it.

cant you just ctrl alt del , then file - new task - then browse - then find your .exe file that runs your antivirus software, or just go on line and do a scan fron there?
