XP Pro Upgrade

Hello

I have xp pro upgrade disk, not the full install but the upgrade from another version disk.

Installed this over windows 'ME' and was quite happy with it for about a week until i rebooted and got a corrupt file in windows/system32/config/system and couldnt reboot.

I tried to boot from the upgrade cd to use the 'r' option but it wouldnt boot..i checked the bios and it was set on boot from cd...whenever i tried to boot from promt it just said cant boot from a dos window or emulation or something like that.

Anybody have any thoughts on how to invoke a repair 'R' option or is this just a reformat and hope it doesnt happen again type situation.

Regards

From this, it sounds like you are somehow trying to boot it from within an operating system, I suppose after XP fails to boot. Otherwise there would be no prompt to boot from. So maybe you are a newcomer on the wrong track.

Just have the CD in while the computer is restarting. There should be a message that comes on the screen when the computer automatically tries to boot the CD. It will say something like "Press any key to boot from the CD." If you don't get that, there is something amiss with the boot CD.

But if you get that far, wait for the install screen to show up, which takes a while. Choose "Install Windows XP" On the next screen after that choose Repair.

But this should not be happening.

Hi

I rebooted and i got the error message... so i rebooted from the cdrom but like i said that didnt work so i used a win98 boot disk of which i installed cdrom drivers and got a promt.

The xp disk did have an auto-inf file but that didnt boot it...setup didnt work either....so anyways fdisk and a reinstall worked lol

Thanks for the help and input.

Hope this XP fiasco doesnt happen again.

So the XP CD would not boot until you zeroed the HD, and then it would? New one on me.
