XP Pro OEM and Update to Vista

I will need a computer for a specific task a few months down the road, and it has to be running XP Pro. I'm thinking of just buying XP Pro OEM with Vista upgrade from Newegg or ZZF.

The OEM versions they sell there have a deadline of 3/15/07 for a Vista Upgrade. If I buy the XP Pro OEM before that, do I need to install it before 3/15/07 to be eligible for the upgrade? Or I can install XP say in June, and then request my upgrade just to have it. Or I can request the upgrade before 3/15/07 even though the XP Pro won't be installed yet?

Thanks,

I haven't done it, but I thought that basically it just came with a coupon or code # you used to order Vista from MS and have it sent to you, so you probably don't need to actually install XP. Doesn't Newegg's site have the info somewhere?

XP would need to be installed and activated and the upgrade papers submitted before the 3/15 deadline. FWIW, I tried to order the upgrade without installing MCE2005, and the upgrade center wouldn't validate my coa. You are better off just buying a full copy of oem Vista later on, because the upgrade center is a HUGE CLUSTERF**K

bigdaddy51,

That's what I suspected as well, i.e. needing to install and activate XP prior to 3/15.

Thanks.
